IUPUI Jaguars athletics began in March 1971, when a student basketball team from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis entered an intercollegiate tournament. The university was created in 1969 by combining the Indiana University and Purdue University campuses in Indianapolis. A formal men’s basketball team followed in 1972 under the Metros name. The university added women’s basketball, softball, and volleyball in 1975, and the program entered the NAIA in 1978.
The Metros built their early record in NAIA competition. Men’s basketball won District 21 tournaments in 1985 and 1990. Softball reached nine consecutive national tournaments from 1983 and finished third three times. Women’s basketball won two district titles and advanced to the 1991 national semifinal before losing to Southwestern Oklahoma State.
IUPUI moved to NCAA Division II in 1993 and Division I in 1997. It joined the Mid-Continent Conference and replaced the Metros identity with Jaguars. Men’s soccer won the league tournament in 2000, defeated Marist in a play-in game, and then lost to SMU.
Under Ron Hunter, men’s basketball won the 2003 conference tournament with a 20-14 record. It earned its first national tournament berth, losing to Kentucky in the opening round. IUPUI entered the Horizon League in 2017. The university adopted the Indiana University Indianapolis and IU Indy names in 2023, while Jaguars remained the athletic nickname and basketball continued at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in the city today.

1998 – 2007
The team’s entry into the Mid-Continent Conference prompted an update of its visual identity and name. For the first time, the logo features the program’s full name, including the university abbreviation IUPUI, which stands for Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.
The abbreviation is placed in the groove between the enlarged first and last letters of the word “Jaguars,” symbolizing the unity and cohesion of all the university’s teams, emphasizing their belonging to one large family. This unification reflects a shared goal and mutual support among members of the sports community.
The inscription is accompanied by a fierce image of a jaguar peeking out from beneath the name. The animal is depicted in a pose radiating aggression and danger. The predator bears sharp fangs, extends its claws, and fixes a piercing gaze forward as if carefully watching an opponent. 2007 – 2017
The 2007 logo redesign made it more striking and impressive. The central element became a jaguar depicted in great detail. The predator is shown baring its teeth against the backdrop of a massive iron shield, symbolizing knightly protection.
The iron plate in the foreground simultaneously represents the predator and restrains its aggression. This emphasizes hidden power and energy, ready to be unleashed at the right moment. It conveys the idea of inner strength, enabling athletes to fight for victory and showcase their maximum potential.
The plate, outlined in red, is shaped like a broad crown that widens upward. This adds regal undertones to the image and highlights leadership qualities. The plate’s sharp corners enhance the sense of strength and impressiveness of the union.

2017 – today
The creation of a new emblem accompanied the transition to the Horizon League. The updated design features only the head of a jaguar with a distinctly fierce snarl. The jaguar remains a part of the mascot, conveying the team’s fighting spirit and energy.
Beneath the jaguar image is the university’s abbreviated name, IUPUI. This emphasizes the connection between the sports teams and the educational institution, reinforcing the participants’ identification with the university.
Starting in 2024, the universities were separated, and management of the athletic program was transferred to Indiana University Indianapolis. As a result, the official name was changed to IU Indy. This change will likely affect the logo, potentially prompting an update.
