1965 – 2005
The first Morehead State Eagles logo was created in the mid-20th-century style, when athletic emblems often took the form of anthropomorphic mascots. At the center is an eagle depicted in a humanlike pose, with an expression of determination and confidence. The head of the bird of prey is rendered with great detail. White feathers, a yellow beak with well-defined outlines, and a forward-facing gaze form a vivid image.
The eagle is dressed in a bright blue sweater with a large yellow letter “M” on its chest, set in a serif college-block style. The humanlike appearance is emphasized by the eagle’s arms replacing its wings.
The lower part of the figure retains the features of an eagle: brown feathers on the legs and tail, yellow claws and feet. The eagle is depicted walking forward, with one wing raised and its body slightly leaning ahead.
Different versions used alternative color options. The sweater could be yellow with a blue “M” letter or feature an “MH” monogram. In some versions used for basketball or student teams, the letter was replaced with the word “Morehead.” This variation preserved the symbolic foundation while adapting the image for different athletic contexts.
2005 – 2021
The next Morehead State Eagles logo was the result of reinterpreting earlier symbols and reflected the university’s energetic character. It was developed by Dugout Media, which created a design centered on an eagle with outstretched wings grasping the word “Eagles” in its talons.
The design is built on the contrast between dynamic forms and bold typography. At the center is the eagle’s head, shown frontally. White feathers, a bright yellow beak, and black outlines create a strong visual impression. The eagle’s gaze is tense and directed forward.
Large, stylized blue wings extend from both sides of the head and also serve as the background for the text. The angular geometry of the wings emphasizes energy. The yellow talons are placed slightly below as if holding the word “EAGLES.”
The text structure follows a three-level composition. At the top, the word “MOREHEAD” appears in large white letters with a black outline. Below it is the word “STATE” in yellow, which serves as the design’s focal point. Beneath the eagle’s head is the word “EAGLES,” written in the same white font as the top line. The letters are heavy, sans serif, and slightly widened at the base.

The upper line contains the word “MOREHEAD” in a slight arc, and below it, in proximity, is the word “STATE.” Above the second line, partially covering the letter “A” in “STATE,” is a stylized eagle’s head. White feathers and a yellow beak with dark accents create a distinctive image. The bird’s gaze is focused and slightly intimidating, conveying confidence and a sense of control.
The typeface is dense and geometric. The even proportions of the letters create a sense of reliability and academic authority.
