California Baptist Lancers athletics developed from a small college program into Division I competition. California Baptist College was founded in Riverside in 1950 and entered the NAIA in 1969. Its first national title came in 1974, when Bengt Antin and John Blomberg won the men’s tennis doubles championship. Baseball gained Totman Stadium in 1991, while softball became a regular tournament participant.
The program’s rise began in 1999 with an indoor track and field team championship. From 1999 to 2011, the Lancers collected 22 NAIA team titles and 149 individual championships across 16 years. Swimming became one of the strongest sports, while later wrestlers added three individual national titles at a higher level.
CBU applied to join the NCAA in 2010 and became a full Division II member in 2013-14 through the Pacific West Conference. The Lancers entered the Learfield Directors’ Cup at No. 26 in their first season, and finished first in 2017-18. During five Division II years, 70 percent of the university’s teams reached postseason competition.
The next transition was announced in January 2017. CBU joined the Western Athletic Conference on July 1, 2018, after Fowler Events Center opened with about 4,500 seats. Baseball shared the WAC regular-season title in its first year. In March 2026, men’s basketball beat Utah Valley 63-61 on Dominic Daniels Jr.’s late three-pointer, earning the program’s first national tournament berth and a first-round game against Kansas that year.
