The Massachusetts Minutemen trace their roots to 1863, when Massachusetts Agricultural College opened in Amherst under the Morrill Act. Early teams were known as the Aggies, reflecting the school’s agricultural mission. Basketball began in 1908, while football had appeared earlier. In 1972, after the institution became the University of Massachusetts, the Minutemen name was adopted in reference to New England militia members of the American Revolution.
Baseball reached the College World Series three times during the 1960s. UMass joined the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1976, where basketball later entered its most successful period. Jack Leaman built the program there during the 1960s and 1970s. John Calipari arrived in 1988 and introduced the “Mass Attack” system. From 1992 to 1996, the team won five consecutive regular-season and tournament conference titles.
The 1995-96 squad opened with 26 straight wins, reached No. 1 in the AP poll, and advanced past UCF, Stanford, Arkansas, and Georgetown to the Final Four. Marcus Camby won the Naismith Award, while the season ended at 35-2. In 1997, NCAA sanctions tied to payments Camby received led to the tournament results being vacated.
Under Greg Carvel, hockey won the university’s first Division I national title in 2021 by defeating St. Cloud State 5-0. Football moved to FBS in 2012, and the basketball programs entered the Mid-American Conference in July 2025. Women’s soccer had earlier reached the 1987 national final.
