The McNeese State Cowboys trace their history to 1939, when Lake Charles Junior College opened in southwestern Louisiana. Football began in 1940, the same year the school became John McNeese Junior College. The Cowboys nickname reflected the region’s cattle-ranching culture and stayed with the athletic program as the institution expanded.
McNeese left the Louisiana State University system in 1950, gained four-year status in 1951, and entered the Gulf States Conference. Football won its first conference title in 1963. The university gained status in 1970, and the athletic program joined the Southland Conference in 1972.
From 1976 to 2015, the Cowboys won 14 Southland football championships and regularly appeared in the postseason between 1979 and 1997. Title runs included 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2009. Sam Houston State and Nicholls State became long-term rivals. Under Matt Viator from 2007 to 2017, McNeese recorded 87 wins and 40 losses. In 2013, the Cowboys defeated South Florida 53-21, then the widest victory by an FCS team over an FBS opponent.
McNeese won the league again in 2015 and reached the NCAA postseason before losing to Jacksonville State. Baseball earned several conference championships and national tournament berths. In 2019, the fifth-seeded Cowboys won the conference event by beating Central Arkansas in the final. Rodeo added further conference honors linked to the university’s home region in southwestern Louisiana.

The emblem has retained its previous composition, but the letter “M” has been redesigned. The new font matches the cowboy era style, creating a unified concept with the rider’s image.
