Middle Tennessee State University’s athletic history began shortly after its founding as the Middle Tennessee State Normal School in Murfreesboro in 1911. By the 1950s, the university had expanded significantly and joined the Ohio Valley Conference in 1952. The image was used from 1945 to 1975 and became the first official embodiment of the university teams’ nickname. The design is executed in contrasting black and white, with dark lines forming the structure and white areas creating space and depth.
At the center of the emblem is a rider on a white horse depicted in motion. The man is dressed in a 19th-century cavalry uniform. A short jacket with a high collar, a wide-brimmed hat, and a beard give the image historical accuracy. In the mid-1970s, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders began to shape a new visual direction. The institution moved away from narrative compositions and adopted a more restrained form that reflected a modern understanding of academic identity. The emblem became the university’s first mark, created entirely through typography, without figures or characters.
The design features the combined abbreviation MTSU, presented as a single visual block. All four letters are interconnected, forming a unified structure. The typeface’s geometry is based on straight lines and sharp angles, giving the construction a technological feel. The diagonals of the letter M extend to the left, forming a dynamic axis perceived as a vector of motion.

1998 – 2015
The new image combined the university’s tradition with the dynamics of modern athletics. The emblem, introduced in 1998, reflected strength, motion, and recognition.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders logo features a large MT monogram in deep blue. The letters have a solid structure. The outline has a double design. The white inner line creates contrast, and the black outer contour adds volume and completeness.
Above the monogram is a winged horse, Pegasus, executed in the style of a sports emblem. Its body is stretched diagonally, its wings are open, and its head is facing forward. The updated version of the Blue Raiders’ emblem preserved the visual structure’s continuity while introducing refinements to strengthen the image’s style and compatibility with modern media formats. The construction remained the same. The large MT letters form the foundation of the design. Above them is Pegasus with outstretched wings and a lightning bolt symbolizing speed and power.
The main change affected the color palette. A brighter and more saturated shade replaced the previously muted blue tone. This adjustment increased contrast with the white and black outlines. The mark became visually cleaner and more distinct on digital screens. Other elements, including letter proportions, contours, the position of the mythological horse, and the lightning graphic, remained unchanged.
2019 – today
The current Blue Raiders logo is an updated version of the previous one, designed to enhance visual clarity and adapt to digital environments. The new version retains the structure of the earlier design, with the MT abbreviation as the main element and Pegasus with a lightning bolt above it.
Rickabaugh Graphics, the studio responsible for earlier redesigns, created the project. The update focused on refining proportions and improving legibility. The visual changes mainly affected color and outline. The gray Pegasus from the previous version was replaced with a white one. The black lines and contour detailing of the symbol were retained.
The MT monogram retained its deep blue shade, a traditional color for the university, but it now appears cleaner due to refined contours and stronger lines.
The update did not alter the emblem’s meaning, which continues to convey speed, determination, and focus; however, it gave the mark a modern visual structure, reflecting precision of form and graphic coherence.
