Conference USA: Brand overview

Conference USA was announced in Chicago on April 24, 1995, after the Metro Conference and Great Midwest Conference agreed to merge. Its 12 founders included the University of Cincinnati, University of Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Tulane, and South Florida. Michael Slive became the first commissioner. The new league combined established basketball programs with a football championship launched in 1996 and regular NCAA participation. A full women’s championship program across multiple sports followed in 1996.

East Carolina and TCU joined in 2001, but the 2005 realignment removed eight members. Five moved to the Big East, Charlotte and Saint Louis entered the Atlantic 10, and TCU chose the Mountain West. The conference rebuilt with Rice, SMU, UTEP, Central Florida, Marshall, and Tulsa, and moved its headquarters to Dallas in 2004 as the membership shifted toward the South and Southwest.

Another major reshuffle followed in 2012 and 2013. Houston, UCF, Memphis, East Carolina, and several other programs left for the American Athletic Conference. Florida Atlantic, Florida International, UTSA, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee, and Charlotte entered during the next rebuilding cycle.

From 2021 to 2023, another wave of departures forced a new reconstruction. Jacksonville State, Liberty, and Kennesaw State joined the league, many after moving from FCS to FBS. By the end of the process, none of the original 12 institutions remained in Conference USA.

What is Conference USA?

It is a conference headquartered in Dallas, Texas, under the NCAA Division I. It covers the southern and central states of the United States and organizes competitions in many sports for men and women, including football, basketball, and baseball. The conference serves as a launching pad for professional athletes and fosters regional rivalries.

The logo’s primary colors are blue, red, and white. This combination reflects the patriotism and symbolism associated with the conference’s name. The composition is based on motifs of U.S. national symbols, reinforcing the overall concept.

The emblem’s central element is a closed chain of stars forming a circle, symbolizing the globe. Half of the figure consists of blue stars, while the other half is red. These elements represent the merger of two major conferences, the Metro Conference and the Great Midwest Conference, which formed the foundation for the creation of Conference USA.

The stars’ division into blue and red signifies the two divisions: the blue stars correspond to the western division, while the red stars represent the eastern division. The number of stars matches the number of members in the union, and the association is seeking a 12th member to start sponsoring football programs.

The organization’s name is centered and split into two levels. The word “USA” is highlighted in large blue font, while “Conference” is written in smaller red letters. The inscriptions are neatly arranged on lines similar to those in school or college notebooks.

The emblem conveys the ideas of order, organization, and a systematic approach to training, which form the foundation of success.

A shooting star tracing an ellipse encompasses the two-tone name set against a deep blue background. This highlights the emergence of a new force in the sports world and reflects the patriotic spirit of its members. The white and red letters add a sense of completeness to the composition, aligning with the national color scheme.

The slight italic tilt of the text creates a sense of dynamism and forward momentum, resonating with movement and progress. The blue background emphasizes the participants’ professional level and forms a cohesive image that unites the efforts of all the union teams.

The logo embodies the energy and modernity of the teams representing the country on the sports stage. It highlights the participants’ significant achievements and their readiness to reach new heights in professional sports.

Four new members joined the conference, marking a new stage in its development. The updated logo, which has become a symbol of unity and collective effort, visually represents these changes.

The name consists of two elements. The first part features a large blue “C” connected to the abbreviation “USA” by the rays of a shooting star. Three of the four new members joined the Western Division, highlighted in blue to signify their affiliation with this direction.

A black outline around the letters adds clarity and expressiveness to the image, while white highlights create a sense of depth. This makes the logo visually dynamic and emphasizes the diversity and uniqueness of the conference’s members.

The logo conveys that each team is a leader and a bright star contributing to the union’s strength. The new symbol unites the participants’ competitive spirit and reflects their pursuit of high achievements.

All elements of the updated design convey the importance of the changes in the union’s composition. The silver outline evokes significant sports accomplishments, while the stylish lines and modern format underscore the teams’ professional caliber.
