The history of the South Carolina State Bulldogs dates to 1896, when the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina was founded. Athletics developed gradually, and in the 1920s, football emerged as the school’s primary sport. The Bulldogs built their first football stadium in 1924 and quickly became competitive among regional Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The school added basketball in the 1930s and competed prominently in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Despite wartime constraints in the 1940s, football secured multiple conference titles and produced standout athletes, including future Olympians in the 1950s.
A significant turning point came in 1970, when the university joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The football program flourished under coach Willie Jeffries, dominating the MEAC throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The 1990s saw facility upgrades, notably to Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in 1994, and produced several NFL-caliber talents, including Donnie Shell, Harry Carson, and Dwayne Harper.
The Bulldogs captured MEAC football titles in 2008 and 2009, then won their first Black College Football National Championship in 2010. The university made further infrastructure improvements in 2015, including enhancements to sports training facilities.
In 2021, the Bulldogs notably competed against Jackson State in the Cricket Celebration Bowl. By 2023, South Carolina State had established itself as a leading HBCU athletic program within the MEAC, renowned for developing professional-level athletes and sustaining a deep-rooted tradition in football, basketball, and track & field.

2000 – 2001
For one year, from 2000 to 2001, the South Carolina State Bulldogs sports teams used an emblem featuring an anthropomorphic bulldog that combined athletic enthusiasm with cartoon-like irony. The mascot figure depicted a forward-striding animal with a defiant expression and an energetic stance.
The bulldog is shown in the university’s traditional colors. The white bulldog contrasts with the blue baseball cap and red sweater. The animal’s large head, pronounced lower jaw, tense facial folds, and aggressively furrowed brows create a combative look and emphasize the character’s athletic spirit.
The red sweater features a large “SC” inscription in a stylized font with bold shapes that fit the illustration’s overall cartoon style. The blue cap adds to the symbol’s informal, sporty atmosphere.

2002 – today
Since 2002, the South Carolina State University sports teams have used an updated version of their emblem, featuring the familiar anthropomorphic bulldog and a large letter S on a maroon background.
The letter S is rendered in maroon PMS 202, outlined three times in white and dark blue. Its formal, classic design reflects the university’s traditional symbolism.
Placed atop the letter is the bulldog, whose image nearly mirrors that of the previous version. It appears to be stepping forward in an energetic pose, showing readiness for competition. The mascot wears a red university sweater with large white SC letters, complemented by a blue cap matching the university’s official color scheme of maroon, blue (PMS 2747), and white.
The animal is drawn in a cartoon style, with exaggerated proportions that add emotion and vitality. Bold lines, a wide jaw, furrowed brows, and an intense gaze enhance the impression of strength and athletic determination.
