In 1970, seven historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), including Howard, Delaware State, Morgan State, and North Carolina A&T, established the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Officially recognized by the NCAA in 1971, MEAC launched championships in football, basketball, and track. By achieving NCAA Division I status in 1979, the conference began competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics, significantly raising its profile.

The new Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference logo combines text and a geometric background, creating a visually intense, energetic image typical of NCAA athletic leagues.
The core of the design is the large abbreviation MEAC, rendered in an italicized sans-serif typeface. The letters are massive, angular, and heavy in stroke. The purple letters contrast with the golden background, enhancing their visual impact.
The background is designed as an oval symbolizing unity and continuity. The golden tone adds richness to the design, creating associations with victory and prestige. A partial outline of the oval follows the contour of the letters, achieving a cohesive form and optical unity.
Inside the letter “C,” rays spread outward. They create a glowing effect that conveys energy, strength, and internal potential.
Below the oval, along the lower arc, is the inscription MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE. The font is more static, without slant.

The purple color deepened, increasing visual density and saturation. Its tone is now closer to a noble violet, giving the mark a sense of strength. The contrast with the background was heightened through the updated yellow shade. The background became brighter, warmer, and visually more active.
The structure remained the same. Massive angular letters with distinctive cuts were retained. The “flash” effect in the letter C creates a sense of light and energy, and the entire composition maintains a slanted direction.
The only structural change concerned the position of the inscription MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE. The text was relocated from the lower part of the oval to the top, altering the design’s balance. The emblem became more open and harmonious.
2018 – today
The latest version of the logo was created by the agency Sherpa, which specializes in sports identity. The project aimed to update the organization’s visual style without abandoning its recognizable attributes. While preserving the proportions and color palette, the design team focused on structural refinement.
The new appearance is still centered on the large MEAC abbreviation, placed over an oval oriented diagonally. The letters are rendered in a rich violet color and outlined in white. While in previous versions the letters flowed smoothly into one another, they now have clear boundaries and an internal rhythm.
The background remained the same. The inscription “Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference” was returned to the lower part of the oval, executed in a formal typeface. The text is arranged along a curve, maintaining the dynamic quality of the main shape and balancing the composition’s visual weight.
