Iona Gaels athletics began in 1940, when the Congregation of Christian Brothers founded Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. The Gaels’ name reflected the order’s Irish roots and referred to the Celtic peoples of Ireland and Scotland. Basketball soon became the school’s main sport because it suited a small private college near New York City.
The program reached national attention under Jim Valvano, hired in 1975. Iona won ECAC regional tournaments in 1979 and 1980, earning national tournament bids in both seasons. In 1980, the Gaels recorded their first tournament victory, beating Holy Cross 84-78 before losing to Georgetown. Valvano left later that year for NC State, where he won the 1983 national title.
Iona became a founding member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) in 1981-82 after the Big East had considered the college but admitted Seton Hall. Jeff Ruland kept the team competitive during the 1990s, while Tim Cluess led a longer run after taking over in 2010. His teams won conference tournaments in 2012 and from 2016 through 2019, reaching the national tournament four times before he stepped down in 2020 for health reasons.
Rick Pitino arrived in 2020 and won the league tournament in his first season. He became the third Division I coach to guide five programs to the national tournament. In November 2021, Iona beat No. 9 Alabama 72-68, the first top-10 victory by a team from its conference. Pitino left for St. John’s in 2023 after three seasons.

1993 – 2003
The first emblem depicts a man dressed in attire reminiscent of a Quaker’s traditional outfit. He raises a finger in a guiding gesture while leaning on the word “Iona.” This image is inspired by the Brothers of the Congregatio Fratrum Christianorum, a Catholic branch focused on educating youth from low-income families. Their missionary work led to the founding of the college, which eventually became Iona University.
The second part of the symbolism reflects the meaning of the name “Iona,” which supports the figure depicted. The university’s name and its team have historical and religious roots tied to Iona Abbey in Scotland. Several significant reasons explain the choice.
First, it conveys the path of enlightenment and faith, which became the foundation of the institution’s mission. The name is associated with the prophet Jonah, whose preaching saved a city from destruction. This mission parallels that of the monks of Iona Abbey, who turned the monastery into a center of Christianity in Scotland. Similarly, the Congregatio Fratrum Christianorum came to America to promote education among the poor.
Second, the logo reflects Gaelic roots, traditions, and faith. In the 17th century, the Statute of Iona, signed by a Gaelic Scottish clan, prescribed the teaching of English and the enrollment of children in English-speaking Protestant schools.
The team’s athletes are instilled with faith, perseverance, and dedication to their craft. With a raised finger, the figure on the emblem acts as a mentor, calling players to take their vocation seriously. 2003 – 2013
The image of the missionary on the 2003 emblem underwent significant changes. The character took on a bold, energetic, and self-assured appearance, in contrast to the traditional religious concept. His facial expression, enhanced by an idealized American smile, combines sharp features, a muscular build, and a “hands-on-hips” pose, resembling a scrappy fighter ready for a clash. The image, filled with strength and confidence, conveys the fighting spirit and enthusiasm associated with athletes’ mindsets.
Phoenix Design Works created the mascot design focused on the hero’s energy and charisma. The hero’s gaze is directed toward the dynamic names of the sports teams displayed prominently before the viewers, evoking the sense of motion and activity characteristic of the university’s athletic spirit.
The lettering is rendered in maroon on a gold background. This design highlights the prestige and importance of participating in the university’s athletic life, reinforcing associations with victories and achievements. The logo combines strength, energy, and ambition, reflecting the athletes’ spirit and dedication to competition.
2013 – 2016
The emblem features text rendered in an antique style, with letters adorned with serifs reminiscent of column capitals. This design creates a sense of monumentality, making the letters visually resemble elements of a large architectural structure, symbolizing the “building” of the athletic union.
At the center is a Catholic cross, which references missionary work and Iona Abbey. It echoes the Celtic pattern forming the cross in the university’s official logo. The symbol emphasizes unity, solidarity, and service, which are fundamental to the educational institution’s mission.
The four rays emanating from the center of the cross, along with the lines connecting them, reflect the university’s core values: spirituality, equality, inclusivity, and community. These elements underscore the institution’s foundational principles.
The image of the cross resembles a ship’s wheel, alluding to the history of Iona Abbey and Saint Columba. Like Jesus and the apostles, Saint Columba arrived on the island with 12 brothers. Saint Columba founded the monastery, which played a significant role in spreading the faith.
The cross’s placement within the letter “O” creates the image of a target, emphasizing determination and focus.
The cross with flared ends, used in the emblem, is associated with the Congregatio Fratrum Christianorum, the brothers who founded the university. This connection is the primary reason it is included in the logo.
2016 – today
As part of the 2016 rebranding, the lettering was placed on a shield adorned with the Congregatio Fratrum Christianorum cross, positioned at the bottom. The shield, a symbol of knighthood, represents the protection of faith and the university’s honor. It connects the values of the chivalric era with the dynamic athletic life of the present, emphasizing the traditions and principles on which the teams are founded.
The knightly symbol on the logo demonstrates the university’s commitment to competitions conducted in the spirit of truth, strict adherence to rules, and respect for opponents. The shield reflects protection, honor, and a reward for participants’ dedication to sports and their pursuit of higher ideals.
