Mindray: Brand overview

Mindray was founded in Shenzhen in 1991 by engineers Li Xiting, Xu Hang and Cheng Minghe. From an office with limited capital, the company entered a medical-device market led by Philips and GE Healthcare. It first concentrated on patient-monitoring systems, supplying Chinese hospitals by the mid-1990s with equipment designed around engineering performance and lower cost.

During the 2000s, Mindray added in vitro diagnostic systems and ultrasound equipment, then opened offices in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. In 2006, it became the first Chinese medical-device company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, gaining capital for international growth and acquisitions. The listing attracted Western investors and partners to the expanding business.

Mindray bought US Datascope Corporation in 2008, gaining patient monitors and intra-aortic balloon pumps and establishing American distribution channels. In 2013, it acquired California ultrasound developer ZONARE Medical Systems. Its zone-based imaging architecture strengthened Mindray’s position in a sector dominated by Siemens Healthineers and Philips.

The company left the NYSE in 2016 and operated privately before listing on Shenzhen’s ChiNext exchange in 2018. In December 2023, Mindray acquired a controlling stake in Germany’s DiaSys Diagnostic Systems, expanding its clinical chemistry reagents and laboratory analyzers in Europe. Its products were later installed in nearly 110,000 hospitals across more than 190 countries.

What is Mindray?

It is a Chinese manufacturer of medical diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment. The company produces ultrasound machines, defibrillators, ventilators, and laboratory devices. 1991 – 2010

Mindray Logo 1991

The Mindray logo remained unchanged for nearly two decades, accompanying the brand from its inception in Shenzhen, China, through its formative years and growth.

The main part of the emblem consisted of 17 vertical red stripes of varying widths and uneven spacing. The tops of the stripes formed a smooth, wave-like silhouette, evoking motion, oscillation, or pulsation. Despite this visual resemblance, the meaning of the stripes was not immediately clear to employees or customers, leading to frequent questions and varied interpretations.

Below the main symbol was the word “MINDRAY,” set in a strict, geometric sans-serif typeface. The uppercase letters had consistent stroke widths, rigid straight forms, and minimal detailing. A horizontal line placed beneath the text reinforced the sense of stability and completeness in the composition.

The visual emphasis was on the uniform use of red, symbolically associated with energy, innovation, and the medical field, which is the company’s primary focus. While the red palette conveyed the brand’s strength and ambition, the ambiguity of the stripes’ meaning left the audience unclear.

Although this logo did not establish a unified understanding of its intended symbolism, it successfully reinforced brand recognition among clients and employees during the company’s early years.

2010 – today

Mindray Logo

The updated Mindray logo features the lowercase word “mindray,” set in a custom-designed sans serif typeface with a distinctly geometric character. The font has consistent stroke widths, simple contours, and smooth edges. Notable typographic features include the letters “r” and “a,” which visually create an “echo effect” through dynamically curved lines that emphasize the natural division of the word into the syllables “mind” and “ray.”

Beneath the main wordmark, the corporate slogan “healthcare within reach” is often displayed in a light gray, thin sans-serif typeface. The lowercase style and lighter tone create a visual contrast with the saturated main text, reinforcing the company’s core mission of making healthcare accessible.

The primary wordmark uses a dark red color (Pantone 187C, HEX #C7000B, CMYK C0 M100 Y100 K20). This shade was chosen for its symbolic association with life energy, determination, and a forward-looking vision. It reflects the company’s dynamic nature, its commitment to continuous growth, and its goal of making advanced medical technologies accessible to a wider audience.

Metaphorically, the logo conveys the company’s principles: its soft, smooth forms suggest care and humanity. At the same time, the clean, restrained style communicates professionalism and reliability in the medical technology sector. The color and typography work together to convey a company dedicated to innovation, client responsibility, and accessible, high-quality healthcare.
