Astellas: Brand overview

Astellas Pharma was formed in 2005 from the merger of two Japanese pharmaceutical companies: Fujisawa Pharmaceutical, founded in 1894, and Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical, founded in 1923. Fujisawa specialized in transplantation and immunology drugs, while Yamanouchi focused on urology and ulcer treatments.

The name “Astellas” comes from the Latin “stella,” meaning “star.” After merging, the new company became one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers. In 2010, Astellas acquired OSI Pharmaceuticals, thereby expanding its oncology research capabilities. Later acquisitions included Agensys, Audentes Therapeutics, and Xyphos Biosciences, which enabled the development of cell and gene therapies.

In 2023, Astellas acquired Iveric Bio, strengthening its ophthalmology business. Today, Astellas products span oncology, urology, immunology, and genetic technologies. The company operates in 70 countries with research centers in Japan, the USA, and Europe.

Astellas Logo

The updated Astellas logo is built around a bright, star-shaped motif formed by two intersecting curved lines. Each is asymmetrical, elongated, and oriented differently, resembling a stylized initial A from the brand name.

The color scheme is based on the contrast of red and gray tones. Red conveys strength, energy, and the brand’s bold position in medical research. Gray is associated with precision, rationality, and high expertise required in pharmaceuticals. Their overlap in the central area creates a zone of deep saturated color that adds expressiveness and volume to the graphic.

The company name is placed to the right of the star symbol. The typeface is thin and classic with delicate serifs and balanced proportions. All letters are lowercase, which adds openness and a modern, light feel to the inscription. The elegant type looks professional and understated.

The star symbol conveys Astellas’ aspiration toward excellence and high standards in medical technology. The entire composition takes on an elegant, technological character, highlighting the brand’s innovative spirit and authority within the professional community.
