Northern Illinois University opened in DeKalb in 1895 as Northern Illinois State Normal School. Students formed a football team in 1899 under the informal nickname “Profs,” reflecting the institution’s teacher-training role. Basketball followed in the 1920s. In 1940, the athletic teams adopted the Huskies name, while a 5,500-seat football stadium had already opened in 1927.
NIU expanded its athletic facilities in 1963 and moved football into NCAA Division I in 1969. The transition required stronger recruitment, additional resources, and upgraded infrastructure. In 1973, the Huskies joined the Mid-American Conference (MAC), later leaving in 1986 after a period of noncompliance with conference standards. They returned as permanent members in 1997.
Toledo Rockets and Ball State Cardinals became regular conference opponents. The football program captured a conference championship in 2003 after years of Division I development and continued building its postseason record. The 2012 team became the first from its league to receive a Bowl Championship Series invitation, breaking into a postseason structure usually dominated by wealthier conferences.
On January 1, 2013, Northern Illinois faced the Florida State Seminoles in the Orange Bowl and lost 31–20. Huskie Stadium underwent a major renovation in 2014, adding spectator areas and updating arena infrastructure. The team won conference titles in 2018 and 2021, extending a period of recurring championship campaigns.

1968 – 1988
From 1968 to 1988, the Northern Illinois Huskies used a logo that became one of the most recognizable symbols in college sports. The emblem depicts a husky in a boxing stance. The dog stands on its hind legs, front paws raised, as if preparing for a fight. The image conveyed the spirit of competition and the team’s inner strength.
The artist gave the character a touch of humor and an energetic personality. The raised ears, furrowed brows, and focused gaze made the husky lively and memorable. The drawing’s simplicity resembled the comic and sports illustrations of that era, which students loved in university symbols.
The dog wears a red sweater with black “NIU” letters. The clothing’s color emphasized energy and activity, while the inscription in a strict font indicated the university’s affiliation.
The Northern Illinois Huskies logo used red, white, and black. Their combination gave the design vibrancy, and the contrast made the image stand out on any surface.
The boxer husky became a favorite among students and fans. Its image conveyed the spirit of campus life. It appeared energetic, honest, and slightly humorous, reflecting the atmosphere of athletics and team unity at Northern Illinois.

From 1988 to 2001, Northern Illinois Huskies used a logo that expressed the strength and temperament of the university’s athletic teams. At the center of the composition is a husky in motion, leaning forward. Its mouth is open, fangs bared, and its gaze focused and intense. The contrasting fur lines and the body’s relief give the figure an energetic look and a sense of readiness to fight or run.
To the right of the image is a three-line inscription that reads “NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY.” The text is rendered in a rich red color using a simple geometric sans-serif font. Below is the word “HUSKIES,” written in white with a black outline, which emphasizes the team name and creates visual focus.
The font is clean and strict, and its straight lines highlight the university’s academic and serious nature. The contrast of red, white, and black creates balance between the dog’s emotional image and the restrained text.
The husky symbolized the strength, determination, and loyalty of Northern Illinois athletes, while the concise lettering added weight and an official tone to the emblem.
2001 – today
In 2001, Northern Illinois University introduced a new logo created by Rickabaugh Graphics from Ohio. The symbol received a modern appearance and became a reflection of the team’s character. At the center of the composition is the head of a husky turned in profile. Simple lines and restrained shades of gray, black, and white highlight the shape and silhouette. The gaze is directed upward, conveying determination and a mindset focused on victory.
Below the image is the inscription “NIU” in bright red with white shadows. The large letters with sharp angles resemble a mix of athletic and gothic styles. Beneath it is the word “HUSKIES,” written in white uppercase letters in a strict font. The contrast in text size enhances the composition.
The colors rely on the standard Northern Illinois palette: red, black, white, and gray. Their combination creates a cohesive and balanced image that unites academic restraint with athletic energy.
The husky’s clean silhouette and strong typography became the symbol of a new generation for the university, representing strength and the pursuit of success.
