The Orkin logo represents a company for which pest control is an everyday matter of reliability. It symbolizes cleanliness and protection, prioritizes results over advertising, and conveys the peace of mind that comes from having work done at home.

Orkin: Brand overview

Orkin began in Pennsylvania in 1901, when 14-year-old Otto Orkin borrowed money from his parents to make rat poison and sell it to local farmers. Rodents caused serious problems for agricultural businesses, creating demand for treatment. By 1908, he had moved from selling poison to providing professional pest-removal services. He became known as the Rat Man.

The business relocated to Atlanta in 1925 and adopted the name Orkin Exterminating Company. Atlanta offered access to a larger urban market than rural Pennsylvania. During World War II, Orkin received contracts at military bases, barracks, and other facilities across the United States, where insect and rodent control formed part of sanitation work.

In 1954, Orkin became one of the first pest-control companies to advertise on television. Campaigns featured Otto the Orkin Man as a professional visiting homeowners. Rollins Inc. acquired Orkin for $62 million in 1964 through one of the early large leveraged buyouts in U.S. corporate finance. The brand and operating structure remained in place under the public company.

Orkin later expanded from rodent work into treatment for termites, bedbugs, ants, and other insects. Termite protection developed into a major service as annual property damage reached billions of dollars nationwide. Terminix became a long-running national competitor in termite and general pest control. During the 1990s, Orkin entered Canada and Mexico, followed by operations in Asia, Europe, and Australia.
