The supply of medicines and medical supplies requires coordinating production, storage, and distribution to hospitals and pharmacies. These processes involve large volumes of products, including vaccines, medications, and consumables. The Sinopharm logo is associated with a pharmaceutical group that manufactures and distributes medicines and medical products nationwide.
Sinopharm was founded on November 26, 1998, in Beijing. The company was created through the merger of China’s state-owned pharmaceutical enterprises. Its establishment was part of the late-1990s reforms aimed at consolidating the industry and improving efficiency. The new holding was tasked with becoming the national leader in the production, research, and distribution of medicines and medical equipment.
In the early 2000s, Sinopharm modernized its inherited factories and created a network of specialized divisions. In 2003, during the SARS outbreak, the company supplied hospitals with medicines and equipment.
In 2009, the company held an initial public offering in Hong Kong and raised 1.8 billion dollars. In the same year, it acquired Beijing Tiantan Biological Products, a vaccine manufacturer. During the 2010s, the holding bought regional distribution networks and expanded into pharmaceutical retail.
In 2017, China National Biotec Group was established within Sinopharm. It brought together institutes specializing in vaccine development and production. In 2018, amid a national scandal over substandard drugs, the company reinforced its quality control system.
In 2020, the company developed inactivated COVID-19 vaccines through its subsidiaries in Beijing and Wuhan. In December, the vaccine received approval from the Chinese regulator. In 2021, the World Health Organization approved the vaccine and included it in the international COVAX program.
In 2021 and 2022, the company built new plants designed to produce billions of vaccine doses. Sinopharm expanded its exports, supplying products to more than 100 countries. In 2023, it began developing mRNA vaccines. In 2024, the company announced the launch of projects in oncology and rare diseases.
Sinopharm remains China’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturer. The company ranks among the global leaders in vaccine production and manages a network of research centers, factories, and distribution facilities worldwide.
Meaning and History
What is Sinopharm?
The largest pharmaceutical holding company in China, headquartered in Beijing, unites more than 1,500 subsidiaries and generates about $ 35 billion in revenue. It is among the top three industry leaders, along with China Resources Pharmaceutical and Shanghai Pharmaceuticals. The main areas include the distribution and logistics of medicines, retail pharmacy operations, and equipment supply. The network serves over 230,000 clients, and the retail segment offers traditional Chinese medicine products.
2002 – 2017
Sinopharm previously used a logo featuring a three-dimensional spiral form above the company name. The image reflected pharmaceuticals, the group’s Chinese origins, and the large scale of the state-owned company.
Sinopharm is the trade name of China National Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. Its abbreviated Chinese name is 国药集团. The group was established on November 26, 1998, as a state-owned pharmaceutical corporation of the People’s Republic of China. The name combines “Sino” and “pharm.” The first part refers to China, while the second comes from “pharmaceutical.” The Chinese name 国药集团 translates as “National Pharmaceutical Group.”
The group’s earlier English name was China National Pharmaceutical Group Corporation. Its English-language website now uses China National Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd. Sinopharm Group Co., Ltd. is a separate publicly listed subsidiary established in Shanghai in January 2003. It belongs to the group and represents Sinopharm’s public company division.
The upper section of the old logo was built around an abstract three-dimensional form. It resembled a ribbon twisted into a funnel-shaped spiral. The overall silhouette looked like an inverted cone with a wavy upper edge. The form suggested a vessel, a DNA ribbon, or a pharmaceutical beaker.
The front section was divided into green and white horizontal stripes. The rear section featured blue surfaces with additional white stripes at the bottom. The black word SINOPHARM appeared below the emblem. All letters were uppercase and set in a formal, block-style serif typeface. The word curved upward, while the same name was repeated behind it in gray, creating an oval form and a reflection effect.
2017 – today
Sinopharm moved from its old three-dimensional emblem to a lighter image. The current version combines the Chinese name 国药集团, the Latin wordmark SINOPHARM, and an abstract form on the left. The symbol continues the earlier spiral theme and connects the brand with medicine, life, and the group’s growth.
The image was named “生命之心,” meaning “Heart of Life.” Its foundation comes from the expression “上善若水,” in which the highest good is compared to water. The wave-like lines refer to water. Green, blue, and light blue correspond to the earth, sky, and sea. According to the brand description, they represent Sinopharm’s three systems of commerce, science, and industry.
A spiral-shaped figure composed of four asymmetrical wave-like sections appears on the left. They are arranged one above another and form a shape resembling a bowl, funnel, or open vessel. From top to bottom, the colors are purple, green, turquoise, and light blue. The spiral resembles the DNA of a living organism, connecting the emblem with medicine and growth.
Four blue Chinese characters appear on the upper line to the right. The lettering draws on traditional Chinese forms but has a simpler, more formal appearance. The strokes are medium in weight, and the proportions are close to square. The word SINOPHARM appears below in uppercase gray letters. It uses an upright sans-serif typeface resembling Univers or Frutiger. Through the heart, water, and DNA imagery, the logo conveys care, responsibility, innovation, and shared use.
