Lake Superior State Lakers athletics grew from a small public college founded in 1946 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Hockey arrived in 1972 and soon became the university’s leading sport. The team first competed in NAIA, won two national titles during the 1970s, and joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association against larger programs such as Michigan and Michigan State.
Frank Anzalone took over in 1982–83 and built the team into a national contender. In 1987–88, the Lakers finished 33–7–6 and reached the NCAA final at Lake Placid. Mark Vermette scored the overtime winner against St. Lawrence, while goaltender Bruce Hoffort made 49 saves and earned tournament MVP honors. The victory brought Lake Superior State its first Division I crown. It made it the smallest school by enrollment to win the men’s hockey championship.
Taffy Abel Arena opened in 1989, named for 1924 Olympic champion Clarence “Taffy” Abel. Under Jeff Jackson, the Lakers won further national titles in 1992 and 1994, defeating Wisconsin and Boston University. They also reached the 1993 final, losing 5–4 to Maine after four overtimes.
After 1996, the program spent nearly 25 years outside the national tournament. The Lakers moved to the WCHA in 2013, won that league in 2020–21, and returned to the revived CCHA in 2021. More than 40 former players later signed with NHL clubs, including Pete Stauber, who became head coach of the Minnesota Wild. Basketball, track and field, and tennis compete in the GLIAC.
