Louisiana Tech Bulldogs: Brand overview
The history of the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs athletic program began in 1901, seven years after the founding of the Louisiana Industrial Institute. In the 1920s, the teams received their well-known nickname “Bulldogs,” reflecting the character of the university’s athletes.
An important moment was winning their first conference championship in 1936, strengthening the team’s standing in American football. Despite the impact of World War II, the program recovered and continued to develop actively in subsequent decades.
The 1970s became a successful period: in 1973, the Bulldogs won their first national championship in their division. In 1988, the team transitioned to a higher NCAA division, and in 2001, they won their first Western Athletic Conference championship.
Upon joining Conference USA in 2013, the Bulldogs quickly adapted, earning victories against Illinois in the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl and against Navy in the 2016 Armed Forces Bowl.

The Tech Fight Song enhances the atmosphere of the games, and the mascot is a live English bulldog. The red and blue represent tradition and spirit, uniting students and fans.
1968 – 2007
The first logo featured the letter “T” against the outline of the Louisiana map. It emphasized the university’s primary focus on technical disciplines, and this letter became the foundation for the name of the university’s women’s sports team, the Lady Techsters.
The emblem was created during the transformation of Louisiana Polytechnic Institute into a full-fledged university, initiated by director Foster Jay Taylor. This process was completed several years later, solidifying the institution’s role.
The blue emblem highlighted the university’s focus on technological education. At the same time, the bold red letter drew attention to the progressive changes the university made in sports and other areas in the region.
2008 – today
The team logo was updated after Kerry Rupp assumed the head coach position. The letter “T” was complemented by the abbreviation “LA,” rendered in blue to emphasize the connection to Louisiana. At the same time, the “T” was expanded to the full word “Tech,” ensuring the university’s identification was as clear as possible.
The Bulldogs’ nickname was not incorporated into the updated design, likely because the women’s teams were named separately, preserving their individuality and maintaining the harmony of the visual identity.
