The Big West Conference began on July 1, 1969, as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Its seven founders were Fresno State, Long Beach State, San Diego State University, San Jose State, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Los Angeles, and Pacific. Long Beach State won the first basketball season at 10-0 in league play. It reached the NCAA Tournament, giving the new organization its first national exposure.
Utah State joined in 1978 as the first member outside California. University of Nevada, Las Vegas and New Mexico State followed in the early 1980s, while women’s sports were formally added in 1983. The league adopted the Big West name in 1988 as membership spread across the West. University of Utah competed briefly before leaving for the Mountain West in 1999.
Football became harder to maintain as major programs moved to stronger leagues with richer media contracts. By 2000, the conference had lost several prominent members and ended football sponsorship after the season. It then focused on basketball, baseball, volleyball, track and field, and other sports that required lower operating costs.
Hawaii joined in 2012, extending membership beyond the continental United States. UC Irvine reached the Sweet 16 in 2019 after defeating Kansas State. Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego entered in 2020, and by 2026 the conference had 11 full members, sponsored championships in 21 sports, and remained centered mainly on California universities across men’s and women’s programs.
