IQVIA: Brand overview

IQVIA was established in 2016 after the merger of two major companies, Quintiles and IMS Health. IMS Health was founded in the United States in 1954. The company became the first provider of data on drug sales and physician prescriptions. By the 1980s, it had become a global leader in pharmaceutical analytics, with databases covering dozens of countries.

Quintiles was founded in 1982 by biostatistician Dennis Gillings. The company conducted clinical trials for pharmaceutical firms. In the 1990s, it became the world’s largest contract research organization. Hundreds of new drugs were brought to market.

The merger of Quintiles and IMS Health took place in 2016. The deal was valued at $ 17.6 billion. The result was a powerful organization combining analytical technologies and clinical research. In 2017, the company received its new name, IQVIA. It reflected the combination of intelligence and a scientific approach.

After the merger, IQVIA began investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. This accelerated clinical trials and the processing of medical data. In 2018, the Orchestrated Analytics platform was created. It integrated data from medical records and insurance systems.

In 2019, the company acquired the laboratory business Q² Solutions. The deal was worth $ 760 million. In 2020, IQVIA participated in COVID-19 vaccine research. From 2021 to 2022, the company developed decentralized trials using telemedicine and wearable devices.

IQVIA remains the largest global organization in clinical research and analytics. The company conducts thousands of trials and processes large volumes of medical data. Its clients include pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and research centers worldwide.

Quintiles Transnational Holdings and IMS Health Holdings completed their merger on October 3, 2016. The transaction was structured as a merger of equals. The new group was named QuintilesIMS, formed from the names of the two participants.

IMS Health worked with healthcare data, analytics, and technology services. Its history began in 1954, when Ludwig Frohlich founded Intercontinental Marketing Services. The organization collected and analyzed pharmaceutical market information. The long name was later shortened to IMS.

Quintiles conducted clinical research and supported drug development. Its history is connected to Dennis Gillings. He began advising pharmaceutical companies on statistics and data processing in 1974. Quintiles Transnational was incorporated in 1982.

Following the merger, Quintiles’ clinical research operations were combined with the analytics and information resources of IMS Health. The shared brand represented the services of both companies under the QuintilesIMS name.

An uppercase letter “Q” formed the foundation of the emblem. A purple ring created its inner section. At the bottom, the line ended in an angled cut and short tail that formed the letter “Q.” An open field remained in the center.

A second ring composed of colored arcs, short lines, and dots surrounded the “Q.” Gaps separated the sections. Saturated light blue, pale blue, and purple were used. The segments of different lengths resembled a chart or data arrays arranged around a shared core.

Large arcs alternated with short sections and dots. Every part followed the circular path. Purple appeared in the inner ring and among the outer segments, connecting the two levels of the emblem.

The name QuintilesIMS appeared to the right of or beneath the emblem. The wordmark used a sans-serif typeface. In Quintiles, the initial “Q” was uppercase, while the remaining letters were lowercase. IMS appeared in uppercase letters. The different cases separated the two parts within the joined name. The text was dark gray.

The vertical version placed the emblem above the name. In the horizontal version, the circular “Q” appeared to the left of the text. Both formats retained the combined name, purple core, and ring of colored segments.

2017 – today

IQVIA Logo

QuintilesIMS became IQVIA Holdings Inc. on November 6, 2017. Nine days later, its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker IQV, replacing the former ticker Q. The renaming covered the corporate brand, stock symbol, and group identity. The legal and operating structure of QuintilesIMS remained in place.

IQVIA is pronounced “eye-cue-vee-uh.” The letter “I” refers to IMS Health, “Q” recalls Quintiles, and VIA comes from the Latin word “via,” meaning “way” or “path.” Company representative Tor Constantino described VIA as a path to change through data and science. The shorter name preserved a connection with both companies and replaced the combined QuintilesIMS form.

IMS Health contributed experience in healthcare information, analytics, and technology. Quintiles added clinical research development and execution. Under the IQVIA brand, the group combined data, scientific expertise, technology services, and drug research.

The logo consists of a colored emblem on the left and the word IQVIA on the right. The emblem contains five horizontal stripes of uniform thickness and different lengths. The lines begin in light blue on the left and transition to blue. Purple sections appear where they overlap. The stripe ends are rounded.

A semicircular cutout appears on the right. It passes through all five stripes and resembles a transparent circle placed over the colored layers. The lines continue beyond its boundary, creating the image of data streams, scanning, or a multilayered analytical chart.

The stripes of different lengths form a stepped outer contour. The semicircular cut connects them through a shared inner form. At the same time, the transition from light blue to blue unifies them by color. Light blue, blue, and purple refer to the company’s technological, analytical, and scientific work.

The word IQVIA uses uppercase letters in a sans-serif typeface. The letters have rounded contours and uniform main stroke widths. “I” and “Q” are bright light blue, while VIA is dark blue. The color division helps viewers perceive IQ and VIA as two parts of the name.

The emblem is taller than the line of letters and is separated from the wordmark by open space. Light blue and blue appear in both parts of the logo, while purple appears where the stripes intersect.

Following the renaming, divisions began transitioning to the IQVIA brand. The IMS Health and Quintiles names gradually gave way to the shared corporate name. At the same time, the company continued operating on the foundation of QuintilesIMS.
