Medical devices for patient care are used for chronic conditions and must perform reliably in daily use. These products include wound care, ostomy, and catheterization supplies. The ConvaTec logo is associated with a company that develops and manufactures medical devices for long-term patient use.
ConvaTec was established in 1978 as a division of E.R. Squibb & Sons and later became part of Bristol-Myers Squibb. The company was founded to commercialize medical technologies in the fields of ostomy and wound care. Its first major product was the Stomahesive system, a hydrocolloid-based product designed to protect the skin. In the 1980s, the company developed Duoderm dressings, which set a new standard for chronic wound treatment.
After Bristol-Myers and Squibb merged in 1989, ConvaTec became a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical group. In the 1990s, the company opened research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1996, it introduced the ActiveLife ostomy system. In the 2000s, the company expanded to global markets and built distribution networks across Europe and Asia.
In 2008, ConvaTec was sold to the funds Nordic Capital and Avista Capital Partners for $ 4.1 billion. In 2012, control passed to Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and Avista Capital. In 2016, an IPO was held on the London Stock Exchange. The company raised about 1.5 billion pounds at a valuation of 4.5 billion pounds.
In 2017, the company faced manufacturing difficulties, leading to a decline in its market capitalization. In 2018, under the leadership of Nick Pagani, a transformation program began. It included modernizing factories and IT infrastructure. In 2019, restructuring was completed. Part of the production was moved to the Dominican Republic and the United States.
In 2020, demand for the company’s products increased due to a rise in hospitalizations. In 2021, ConvaTec launched digital solutions for patient condition monitoring. In 2022, the company acquired Confluent Health and expanded its skincare product portfolio. In 2023, a new generation of ostomy systems was introduced. In 2024, construction of a plant in Thailand began.
ConvaTec Group operates in more than 100 countries. The company is included in the FTSE 100 index and remains a global leader in ostomy, wound, and continence care.
Meaning and History
What is ConvaTec?
A British medical company develops products for the care of chronic conditions and long-term medical treatment. Its areas include ostomy care, wound management, continence care, and infusion technologies. Among its key solutions are the Stomahesive adhesive, which protects skin from irritation, and Hydrofiber dressings, which form a gel to maintain a moist healing environment. The product range includes one-piece systems (Stomadress and Esteem), two-piece solutions (Esteem Synergy without flanges), and the Aquacel line (with and without silver ions), used for surgical and burn wounds with a long-term therapeutic effect.
1978 – 2022
ConvaTec was established in 1978 as a division of the American pharmaceutical group E.R. Squibb & Sons. It produced ostomy care products and medical adhesive materials. Its first product was the Stomahesive skin barrier. It was based on hydrocolloid adhesive technology developed by Squibb researcher Dr. James Chen. The material protected the skin around a stoma and established ConvaTec’s connection with long-term patient care.
E.R. Squibb & Sons merged with Bristol-Myers in 1989, bringing ConvaTec into Bristol-Myers Squibb. In 2008, Nordic Capital and Avista Capital Partners acquired the division and combined it with the Danish medical device manufacturer Unomedical. The combined group continued operating under the ConvaTec name. Its products covered ostomy and wound care, continence care, and infusion therapy.
ConvaTec Group Plc began trading on the London Stock Exchange under the ticker CTEC in October 2016. Before the 2022 redesign, the company used a logo featuring a circular emblem and the name ConvaTec. The design appeared on packaging, documents, and medical products.
The circle appeared to the left of the name. The emblem and wordmark used the same dark turquoise-blue color. A white geometric figure appeared inside the circle. A triangular upper section stood above three vertical supports connected by a shared base. The lines had uniform thickness and resembled a simplified building facade.
The word ConvaTec appeared on the right in mixed case. The initial “C” and the letter “T” in the middle were uppercase, while the remaining letters were lowercase. The wordmark used a medium-weight sans-serif typeface with even lines. The letters stood upright. The text matched the circle in height, while the shared color connected the name with the emblem.
2022 – today
Convatec introduced its updated brand on May 18, 2022. The company’s internal Marketing Centre of Excellence led the project. Convatec connected the changes with a shift toward a model centered on people with chronic conditions, healthcare professionals, and caregivers. The new identity introduced the Forever Caring promise for continuous communication with patients and professional audiences.
Within the company, the new emblem was named the Hug icon. The open space at its center represents the patient. Two rounded forms surround the space and resemble an embrace from Convatec employees and healthcare professionals. The Hug icon gave the promise of continuous care a visual form.
The Hug icon appears to the left of the name. It consists of thick curved bands with rounded edges. Semitransparent arcs partially overlap and surround the open area. A dark magenta circle appears inside. Purple, magenta, light pink, and lilac bands run around it. Smooth color transitions and transparent layers create the effect of several connected sections.
The new system replaced the former blue identity with a combination of magenta, pink, and purple shades. The colors support the idea of the Hug icon, where rounded arcs surround the patient. The soft forms resemble an embrace and represent continuous care.
The lowercase word Convatec appears on the right in purple. The name uses a semibold sans-serif typeface with rounded forms, even strokes, and dense proportions. The historic ConvaTec spelling changed to Convatec. The pronunciation of the name and its connection with medical products remained unchanged.
The phrase “Forever Caring” appears beneath the name. It uses lowercase letters in a thin sans-serif typeface and a light magenta shade. Two short horizontal lines appear on either side. Convatec describes Forever Caring as a long-term promise to patients and healthcare professionals.
The redesign accompanied the development of the brand around four business areas. They included Advanced Wound Care, Ostomy Care, Continence Care, and Infusion Care. The Convatec name continued to appear with Stomahesive, DuoDERM, AQUACEL, and other medical products. All four areas received a unified identity featuring the Hug icon and the phrase Forever Caring.
