The NJIT Highlanders logo conveys a rational mindset and an engineering approach. The team builds its play as a system, with precise calculation and attention to each detail. Their strength lies in maintaining structure and stability in any situation.

NJIT Highlanders: Brand overview

The history of the NJIT Highlanders dates back to the founding of Newark Technical School, now known as the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), in 1881. However, formal athletics started much later, with the establishment of basketball and baseball teams in the 1960s. The university adopted the nickname “Highlanders,” a reference to Newark’s Highlands neighborhood.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, NJIT competed in NCAA Division III. In 1986, it opened the Fleisher Athletic Center, which significantly improved conditions for basketball and other sports. Men’s basketball and volleyball notably strengthened during the 1990s.

A major turning point came in 2006 when NJIT transitioned to NCAA Division I athletics, becoming the first New Jersey institution to do so. Initially, this move posed scheduling challenges, as the Highlanders competed without conference affiliation from 2007 to 2013.

In 2014, NJIT joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, significantly enhancing its athletic stability. A landmark victory in 2015, when the basketball team defeated Michigan, brought national attention to the program.

Further facility improvements included the opening of the $110 million Wellness and Events Center in 2019, which offered enhanced athletic resources. Between 2020 and 2023, NJIT expanded its Olympic and women’s sports programs, strengthening its competitive standing within the ASUN.

NJIT Highlanders Logo

The redesigned NJIT Highlanders logo is executed in an athletic style and conveys the character of a Scottish Highlander. It has been a symbol of the university since the 1940s. The warrior figure is depicted in vivid detail, with flowing hair, a focused gaze, and a red-and-white checkered scarf. The Highlander holds a round shield and a sword.

Above the warrior is the abbreviation NJIT, made in a bold serif font with gray shadows. The white letters are outlined in blue, creating a sense of depth. Below them is a curved red ribbon with the word “Highlanders” in white sans-serif font.

The composition includes a sword with a flat, horizontally oriented blade beneath the abbreviation. The sword is rendered in gray-blue metallic tones, matching the letters.

The visual design was created by Phoenix Design Works, a studio known for projects with NCAA universities. Before developing the logo, the team studied NJIT’s history and held meetings with students, faculty, and athletes. This helped reflect in the Highlander’s image traits of courage, independence, and readiness for competition.

The typeface designed for NJIT combines industrial shapes with smooth lines and detailed shadowing. It harmonizes with the warrior figure, giving the emblem a modern character.
