America East Conference: Brand overview

America East Conference began in 1979 as ECAC North, created for northeastern colleges that wanted a regional basketball league outside the broad ECAC structure. Its ten founding members included Boston University, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Holy Cross, Canisius, Colgate, and Niagara. Holy Cross won the first tournament in 1980 by defeating Boston in the final.

Membership changed regularly during the 1980s as Rhode Island, Canisius, Niagara, and other schools left, while Hartford later joined. In 1988-89, the league expanded beyond basketball, opened a permanent office, appointed its commissioner, and became the North Atlantic Conference. Its champion received an automatic berth in the Division I men’s basketball tournament.

University of Delaware and Towson joined in 1995, extending the league into the Mid-Atlantic region. On July 1, 1996, it adopted the name America East Conference. Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, and Towson moved to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001, while Albany, Binghamton, and Stony Brook entered. UMBC followed in 2003, UMass Lowell joined in 2013, and Boston left for the Patriot League.

On March 16, 2018, UMBC defeated top-seeded Virginia 74-54 in the NCAA Tournament. It became the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in the 64-team era, ending a previous record of 0-135. UMBC scored 53 points after halftime, more than 15 Virginia opponents had managed in an entire game that season alone.

1996 – 2008

The conference, founded in 1979, has undergone several name changes. The logo was created when the organization was renamed the America East Conference.

The emblem’s design is based on the ideas of leadership, the pursuit of victories, and the expression of patriotic spirit. The central element is a large star outlined with blue lines. The lightness and directionality of these contours symbolize movement, dynamism, and the participants’ level of athletic training.

The star’s upper tip stands out in vibrant red, emphasizing the aspiration for greatness and the desire to be first. Additionally, the element visually forms the letter “A,” referencing the initial letter of the conference’s name.

The organization’s name is displayed in two levels. A thin, pointed line dividing them simultaneously serves as the crossbar of the letter “A.” It resembles a swiftly flying arrow, symbolizing determination, dynamism, and the athletes’ strength. The element conveys rapid forward movement and a focus on the future, with the conference’s athletes playing a significant role.

The red, white, and blue colors used in the logo correspond to the shades of the U.S. national flag, emphasizing the connection to the country’s traditions and the importance of the organization it represents.

2008 – 2013

The emblem was updated to feature a more stable composition that emphasizes clear, refined elements. The star, which remains in the background, gained an additional outer contour in the form of a thin blue line. This stroke emphasizes stability and leadership, reinforcing the conference teams’ core achievements and virtues.

The name is rendered in bold, confident letters with a slight forward tilt. The writing style reflects the organization’s accomplishments and aspirations for further growth. The words in the name are distinguished by color: “America” is in blue, while “East” is in red. The change in shades creates a visual effect of gradual progress, reflecting the accumulated victories achieved over the conference’s existence.

At the bottom of the composition, a blue ribbon is curved in an arc. The word “Conference” completes the full name. The ribbon’s curve serves as a visual symbol of cohesion and interconnectedness among the participants, highlighting their solidarity and unity within the organization.

2013 – 2024

The replacement of two teams led to changes and updates in the design. In the new logo, the letter “A” is styled to resemble an airplane’s keel. The boldness and expressiveness of the design emphasize the conference’s strengthening position in the sports life of the United States, highlighting its importance and influence.

White horizontal lines on the right side of the letter “A” visually resemble the markings of a runway. This symbolizes moving toward new achievements and striving for high results.

The name is presented in a modern square font, with the letters varying in thickness, adding contrast and expressiveness. The increased weight of the characters visually aligns with the powerful imagery, complementing the overall concept.

The blue color of the letter “A” and the word “Conference” brings a sense of lightness to the design. Blue is associated with the sky, enhancing the logo’s connection to the theme of flight and upward movement.

In 2024, a new image was introduced, reflecting a fresh perspective on the conference’s symbolism. The emblem is designed in a style that references the Captain America theme. The central element is an iron shield painted in national colors, with a star added at the bottom. This enhances associations with valor, loyalty, and honor, symbolizing the high qualities and drive for success inherent in the participating teams.

The conference name is centered on a metallic background. The elongated legs of the two outer “A” letters create a wing-like visual effect, adding dynamism and emphasizing the superhero theme. This strengthens the logo’s connection to strength, protection, and the aspiration to reach great heights.
