Otsuka Pharmaceutical Logo 1964

In the early Otsuka Pharmaceutical mark, the founder’s family name formed the basis of the entire emblem. The name comes from Busaburo Otsuka, while the Japanese spelling 大塚 is commonly translated as “large tomb mound” or “large mound.” The logo used from 1964 to 2007 was built around the OTSUKA name and presented in a form resembling a crest.

The composition is enclosed within a double circle. At the center is a stylized OTSUKA wordmark set in a formal sans-serif typeface resembling DIN or Univers. Black lines give the emblem a restrained, orderly, and professional appearance. The letter “T” extends upward and separates the “O” from “SUKA,” serving as the axis of the inner section.

The horizontal bar of the “T” runs above the word and connects to the outline of the inner circle. This construction makes the wordmark appear enclosed from above, almost as if it were placed beneath a lid. The arrangement makes the brand name the primary part of the emblem. At the same time, the letter “T” functions as an independent form within it.

The word “PHARMACEUTICALS” runs along the outer circle. Its uppercase letters follow the curve with consistent spacing. Two five-pointed stars on the sides separate the outer inscription from the main area. The complete emblem resembles an official pharmaceutical seal, combining the founder’s family name, a circular structure, and formal typography into a unified corporate image.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Logo

On June 26, 2007, Otsuka Pharmaceutical introduced a new corporate logo. The update accompanied the company’s growth as an international pharmaceutical business focused on research, new medications, and the global market.

The logo is based on the letter “O” from the Otsuka name. Two soft-edged shapes of different sizes appear to the left of the wordmark. The larger blue shape represents the sky above people. The Otsuka BLUE gradient conveys openness, freedom, intelligence, and the future.

Below it is a smaller red shape with rounded corners. Otsuka RED represents the concentrated energy of Otsuka and is presented as the source of the company’s ideas. Together, the blue and red sections form an image of a space dedicated to human health and happiness.

The Otsuka name appears in a thin light blue sans-serif typeface. The first letter is uppercase, while the remaining letters are lowercase. The typeface resembles Avenir Light or Century Gothic. The soft wordmark complements the rounded shapes on the left. It gives the logo a calm, modern appearance suited to an international market.
