The Patriot League began in 1986 as the Colonial League, founded by Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, Holy Cross, Colgate, and Davidson. The six institutions wanted Division I competition without lowering their academic standards to achieve athletic success. In 1990, the conference adopted its current name, referring to the northeastern region associated with the American Revolution.
The 1990 expansion brought Fordham and the US Military Academy at West Point. Army added a service-academy presence alongside civilian universities. The league held its first men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in 1991, while Navy joined in 1993. Having Army and Navy in one conference gave military institutions an uncommon role in its membership.
In 1995, the NCAA granted automatic berths to the league’s men’s and women’s basketball champions, guaranteeing tournament winners a place in March Madness for the first time. American University joined in 2001, extending the conference into Washington, DC. The conference permitted football athletic scholarships in 2007, replacing the earlier need-based aid model, and added basketball scholarships in 2012.
The conference expanded again in 2013 with Loyola Maryland and Boston University. The latter brought a large urban research institution into a league built mainly around smaller northeastern colleges and service academies. Its arrival changed the membership profile amid competition with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Northeast Conference.

1990 – today
The Patriot League logo was created in 1990 and has retained its original appearance ever since. Its designers sought to convey the unity of the league’s educational institutions and to emphasize their connection to national values and a high level of education. A special role belongs to the military academies, whose influence defined the symbol’s patriotic character.
At the center of the emblem is a simplified image of the American flag. On the left is a dark blue rectangle with white stars, and on the right are two wavy red stripes. The composition resembles a flag waving in the wind and is associated with discipline and order.
Below the image is the league’s name. The inscription is written in large, dark-blue serif letters. The letterforms resemble classic typefaces such as Trajan or Times Bold, giving the text weight and formality.
