Marathon Petroleum: Brand overview

Marathon Petroleum, a US-based refining, marketing, and transportation corporation, has played an important role in the energy sector since its founding in Findlay, Ohio, in 2011. Originating as a subsidiary of Marathon Oil, it has consistently played an important role in the global energy sector.

The company traces its history back to 1887 when it was founded as the Ohio Oil Company in Lima, Ohio. Just two years later, it was acquired by Standard Oil. The evolution of the company continued after 1911. U.S. Supreme Court decided to liquidate Standard Oil, and Marathon Petroleum emerged.

After the collapse of Standard Oil, Ohio Oil Company became an independent company again. The company’s trajectory changed dramatically in 1930 when it acquired Transcontinental Oil Company and rebranded as Marathon. From that point on, the company expanded and solidified its reputation as one of America’s leading oil corporations.

In 1998, a strategic alliance was formed between Marathon Oil and Ashland Inc., resulting in the formation of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC. This company, whose refining capacity exceeds 1 million barrels per day and is headquartered in Findlay, Ohio, has made a significant impact on the refining industry and has taken a leading position in the market.

A new phase began in 2011 when Marathon Oil spun off Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC into a separate company and rebranded it as Marathon Petroleum Corporation. It thus became the largest independent refining company in the United States.

Since the spin-off, Marathon Petroleum has grown significantly and, in 2018, acquired Andeavor, cementing its position as the leading refiner in the United States.

Today, Marathon Petroleum’s influence extends globally, and its refining capacity exceeds three million barrels per day. The corporation’s products are sold and distributed in more than 50 countries, underscoring its position as a leading international refiner.

In 1887, the Ohio Oil Company was established in Lima, Ohio, marking a pioneering leap in the industrial development of the region.

In 1889, the Ohio Oil Company was acquired by John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company, which significantly changed the region’s industrial development. Rockefeller significantly changed the dynamics of the oil sector.

In 1911, the Ohio Oil Company withdrew from Standard Oil’s control, regaining its independent status.

The year 1930 was marked for Ohio Oil Company by the acquisition of Transcontinental Oil Company.

An important moment in industrial consolidation was the United States Steel Corporation’s acquisition of Marathon Oil in 1982.

The merger of Marathon Oil and Ashland Inc. in 1998, resulting in the creation of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, signaled a paradigm shift in the oil industry.

The spin-off of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC from Marathon Oil in 2011 and subsequent renaming to Marathon Petroleum Corporation was an important event in the company’s annals.

Marathon Petroleum’s significant acquisition of Andeavor in 2018 marked a significant consolidation in the energy industry.

Marathon Petroleum Logo

American Refining Company has a composite logo that carries an energy that is barely contained by the trapezoidal frame. The protruding sides seem about to crack and separate. They are actually the outstretched legs of the letter “M” – the first letter of the company name. As if the letter “M” does not fit in its allotted place and is ready to burst out. The glyph is blocky, large, very bold, and red as if filled with incredible energy. Underneath is the full name, typed in lowercase blue sans serif font.

The trapezoidal border gives the impression that the logo is full of energy and ready to break free. The letter “M” stands out like a superhero in a comic book. Red and blue colors make the logo look like a mini scene from an action movie, where the big and bold letter “M” is the main star of the show.
