The company traces its history back to 1887 when it was founded as the Ohio Oil Company in Lima, Ohio. Just two years later, it was acquired by Standard Oil. The evolution of the company continued after 1911. U.S. Supreme Court decided to liquidate Standard Oil, and Marathon Petroleum emerged.

After the collapse of Standard Oil, Ohio Oil Company became an independent company again. The company’s trajectory changed dramatically in 1930 when it acquired Transcontinental Oil Company and rebranded as Marathon. From that point on, the company expanded and solidified its reputation as one of America’s leading oil corporations.

In 1998, a strategic alliance was formed between Marathon Oil and Ashland Inc., resulting in the formation of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC. This company, whose refining capacity exceeds 1 million barrels per day and is headquartered in Findlay, Ohio, has made a significant impact on the refining industry and has taken a leading position in the market.

A new phase began in 2011 when Marathon Oil spun off Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC into a separate company and rebranded it as Marathon Petroleum Corporation. It thus became the largest independent refining company in the United States.

Since the spin-off, Marathon Petroleum has grown significantly and, in 2018, acquired Andeavor, cementing its position as the leading refiner in the United States.

Today, Marathon Petroleum’s influence extends globally, and its refining capacity exceeds three million barrels per day. The corporation’s products are sold and distributed in more than 50 countries, underscoring its position as a leading international refiner.
