Oglethorpe University’s athletic program began in 1916 after the institution was reestablished in Atlanta. Its teams became known as the Stormy Petrels, named after the seabird on James Oglethorpe’s coat of arms. Basketball began in 1921, baseball followed in 1923, and regular intercollegiate competition soon became part of campus life.
Facilities expanded during the 1930s with a gymnasium completed in 1931 and a baseball field in 1934.
