After the merger in 2005, Daiichi Sankyo became Japan’s largest pharmaceutical company, with annual revenue of about one trillion yen. In 2006, the international promotion of the drug Effient began in collaboration with Eli Lilly. In 2007, the company acquired the Indian pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy Laboratories for $ 4.6 billion. The goal of the deal was to expand the generics business, but the project ended in losses and the sale of assets in 2014.

After the merger of the Japanese pharmaceutical giants “Daiichi Pharmaceutical” and “Sankyo Company, Limited” into a single structure, a brand named “Daiichi Sankyo” appeared. In Japanese, “Daiichi” means “number one.” At the same time, “Sankyo” is made from the words “three” and “together,” suggesting partnership. The new name symbolically connected the heritage of both companies, emphasizing their equal contribution to the creation of the combined enterprise.

The Daiichi Sankyo symbol itself is circular, with the color transitioning from deep blue at the bottom to green and yellow at the top. In the center, in the negative space between the two shades, a white form resembling a drop or an abstract cutout appears. Visually, the emblem resembles a sphere reflecting the sky and the sun, conveying a sense of open space or of a globe. However, the image carries several associations, from analogies with molecules and biological processes to the idea of continuous research and transformation in medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. The blue tone conveys a scientific and medical tone, strengthening the brand’s association with serious scientific work.
