Lindenwood University began in St. Charles, Missouri, in 1827, when Mary Easton Sibley and George Champlin Sibley founded a school for young women. First known as Lindenwood School for Girls, it took its name from the linden trees on the grounds. In 1853, a state charter made it the first women’s college west of the Mississippi River, with a liberal arts program for women.
During the 1870s, Sibley Hall became the main campus building, while enrollment expanded beyond Missouri. The institution became Lindenwood College in 1918, followed by new residence halls and academic buildings in the 1920s.
