Boise State University originated as St. Margaret’s School in Boise, Idaho, in 1932. Renamed Boise Junior College in 1934, it started as the area’s first two-year college, initially serving 70 students.
In 1940, the college acquired 110 acres of land, formerly used as an airstrip, for $1, significantly expanding its campus facilities. This enabled the construction of new buildings, dormitories, and administrative offices. By 1955, Boise Junior College opened its first dedicated library named after its inaugural president, Eugene Chaffee.
The institution became Boise College in 1965, offering four-year degrees, and by 1969, it had become Boise State College, a public institution. University status was achieved in 1974 with the official renaming as Boise State University. Athletic programs, notably the Boise State Broncos football team, gained prominence during this period.
In the 1980s, Boise State emphasized research, opening an engineering college and establishing modern laboratories. In 1982, the multipurpose sports complex, The Pavilion (later known as ExtraMile Arena), was constructed.
Graduate education and international cooperation expanded throughout the 1990s, with the introduction of new master’s programs in the social sciences and technology. In 2006, the Interactive Learning Center was completed, enhancing remote education capabilities.
The period from 2010 to 2020 witnessed growth in doctoral research programs, the construction of new science complexes, renovations to Albertsons Stadium, and substantial investments in arts facilities. By 2024, Boise State will increasingly focus on STEM education, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence programs, continually adapting to evolving educational needs.

Before 2013
Architectural associations lie at the foundation of the Boise State University emblem. Strict geometry and symmetry form the basis of the logo, creating an academic image that emphasizes the institution’s seriousness.
The construction is organized on two levels. In the upper block are the words BOISE and STATE, separated by a diamond, and below is the word UNIVERSITY stretched across the entire width, forming the foundation of the composition. The structure creates a division of meaning and supports the balance of text and symbol.
The typography is executed in a modified grotesque typeface close to Bank Gothic or ITC Avant Garde Gothic. All letters are uppercase, elongated, with uniform stroke thickness. The typeface is marked by restraint and precision, and the spacing between letters is selected so that the text appears even and easy to read.
The key accent is the diamond-shaped element. Its form is made of dark blue at the bottom and lighter blue at the top, creating a sense of volume. Inside are three vertical white stripes. They resemble columns and refer to architecture, symbolizing knowledge, order, and growth.
The palette is built around the blue color established in the university’s identity. The shade is associated with professionalism and reliability. The white columns within the diamond accentuate the architectural motifs, adding depth to the composition.
2013 – today
The transition from the old Boise State University logo to the updated one marked a shift in emphasis in the visual identity. Previously, the composition was based on strict architectural geometry and the symbolism of columns. The new emblem, however, drew its inspiration from the Broncos’ sports symbol and transformed it into a universal mark that unites the educational and athletic spheres.
The main symbol became the letter B, designed with a rightward tilt and sharp angles. The slanted lines create a sense of momentum and energy, echoing the spirit of the university’s athletic teams. The symbol was adapted to reflect the institutional identity, maintaining continuity and fostering a unified communication style.
The letter’s geometry is massive. Thick strokes give monumentality, and the contour is highlighted with a thin orange line, which contrasts with the blue fill of the main body. The blue shade is fixed as the official university color (Pantone 661), while orange (Pantone 172) was added to enhance expressiveness and associations with leadership.
The name BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY is placed at the bottom of the emblem and distributed evenly along the horizontal axis. The typeface belongs to the Gotham family or its adapted modifications. Compact proportions, straight lines, and balanced spacing mark it. The bold style reinforces the perception and supports the university’s fundamental image.

The Seal
1932 – today
The Boise State University seal is the official and academic emblem, maintaining continuity with the institution’s founding under its former name, “Boise Junior College.” The seal serves ceremonial and administrative functions, emphasizing the institution’s formal status and history.
The basis of the composition is a circular form with a central landscape image, in which the mountains with sharp outlines are carefully drawn, along with a group of trees with thin trunks and compact crowns, and a key historic campus building with a tall, pointed roof. This architectural structure symbolizes the university’s long history, academic traditions, and stability. At the bottom is the year of founding, 1932, presented in a decorative font.
An important semantic addition is the Latin motto placed at the bottom along the outer contour of the circle: “Splendor Sine Occasu,” which means “Splendor without Decline.”
The name of the institution, “BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY,” is written in uppercase letters along the top of the outer circle of the seal and is executed in a classical sans-serif typeface. The letters are characterized by moderate stroke thickness and even spacing, which creates a strict and official image. The font harmonizes with the traditions of engraved antiquas, strengthening the sense of solidity and historical significance of the emblem.
