The history of the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks dates back to 1886, when Delaware Conference Academy, now known as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, was founded. Official athletic programs emerged in the 1920s. During the 1930s, basketball experienced significant development, becoming the primary sport at universities.
In the 1940s, teams began actively competing against other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). In 1970, the institution adopted its current name, and the teams were named the Hawks. An important milestone was joining the MEAC conference in 1974.
The 1980s were marked by the creation of the women’s bowling team, which brought national recognition to the university. In the 2000s, the bowling team won multiple NCAA national championships. A particular highlight was achieved in 2011 when the team earned another national title.
Today, the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks actively participate in MEAC tournaments, continually improving their athletic infrastructure and developing their programs at the NCAA Division I level.
