The visual identity of the Missouri State Bears, introduced in 2005, became part of the university’s rebranding after the university changed its name from Southwest Missouri State University. The new symbol, created by Phoenix Design Works in New York, retained continuity with the previous emblem. The company developed a complete brand book that included a system of visual elements, a color palette, and usage guidelines.

The core of the athletic logo remains the image of the bear’s head, rendered in the maroon shade BearMaroon with white and black accents. Unlike the previous version, the “SMS” inscription was removed. This eliminated the link to the former name and increased the symbol’s universality. The focus shifted to the animal image, which became the sole sign of the visual system.

The main composition does not include a font. The university name is used separately, set in Minion Pro, which preserves an academic character and visual balance when paired with the emblem.
