Northern Michigan University, originally founded as Northern State Normal School in Marquette in 1899, launched its athletic programs in 1904. Adopting the nickname Wildcats, the university quickly established basketball and football teams and became regular contenders in local competitions during the 1920s.
The Wildcats significantly expanded their athletic presence in the 1960s, entering NCAA Division II and opening their first major sports complex in 1963. A pivotal moment came in 1975 when the football team captured the NCAA Division II national championship, boosting the university’s athletic profile.
In 1976, Northern Michigan became one of the few Division II schools to establish a Division I hockey team. The hockey program reached its peak in 1991, winning the NCAA Division I National Championship and solidifying its national reputation.
Since joining the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 1993, the Wildcats have competed consistently across various sports. Investments during the 2000s and early 2010s improved athletic facilities, notably the Superior Dome, built in 1981 and recognized as the world’s largest wooden-domed stadium.
Between 2016 and 2023, Northern Michigan strengthened its Olympic and women’s sports programs, regularly contending for GLIAC championships and upgrading facilities to support student-athletes.

These are the athletic teams of Northern Michigan University, representing the university in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competitions at the NCAA Division II level. The exception is hockey, which competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association at the Division I level, allowing the university’s teams to earn an excellent reputation on the ice. The unique Superior Dome complex, or “Yuper Dom,” the largest wooden-domed structure in the world, serves as the main venue for football and other sporting events. Dressed in green and gold, these teams have built a strong tradition on the shores of Lake Superior, participating in ice hockey, football, and ski competitions. Even in the upstate area, the teams attract ardent fans inspired by the Wildcat Willy mascot.
1993 – 2015
The Northern Michigan Wildcats’ symbol featured a roaring wildcat. It conveyed the energy and aggressive character of the university’s athletic teams.
At the center of the composition is the head of a lynx, its mouth open, turned to the right. The deep yellow color enhances the impression of strength, while the black outlines and shading add depth and intensity to the image. The crimson-pink mouth and white fangs contrast with the dark background, emphasizing the animal’s predatory nature.
Around the symbol is the inscription Northern Michigan University Wildcats. The green lettering in a bold geometric sans serif font, resembling Impact or Eurostile Bold, reflects the academic precision of the athletic brand.
The design contrasts yellow, black, and green. Their combination strengthens the sense of power and competitive spirit, while the circular frame unites all the elements into a cohesive image.
The logo left a mark on the university’s history, expressing the team’s energy, determination, and character for more than 20 years.
2016 – today
The Northern Michigan Wildcats logo, introduced on July 19, 2016, marked the renewal of the university’s visual identity after two decades with the previous symbol. The design was created by the New York agency Phoenix Design Works, which developed a complete visual identity system, from typography to uniform elements.
The design features an updated lynx head facing right. Sharp lines convey the predator’s tension and strength. The open mouth with white fangs and a red tongue enhances the emotional impact.
The animal’s outlines are defined by bold geometric strokes that emphasize its power and firmness of character. The main color is yellow, complemented by green shadows and contours. White areas within the drawing increase contrast, giving the figure depth.
Below the image is the inscription NORTHERN MICHIGAN in two lines, rendered in green. The font was created for the university, featuring large, angular forms in a strong, athletic style. Beneath it is a yellow rectangle with the word WILDCATS, visually balancing the composition.
The new emblem conveys the team’s determination to compete and win. The image of the lynx facing forward reflects the strength, drive, and spirit of the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
