Founded in Los Angeles in 1933 by Lyman G. Burnett and Charles P. Bell, Packard Bell Electronics, Inc. initially focused on producing radios. In the 1940s, the company broadened its portfolio by stepping into television technology, earning a reputation as a pioneer in the field.

The company shifted gears again in 1986, venturing into the burgeoning personal computer market. Packard Bell quickly succeeded in introducing consumer-friendly and cost-effective home PCs and laptops. The company’s popular product lines, such as Platinum, EasyNote, iMedia, and iStart, further propelled its growth in the market.

During the 1990s, Packard Bell established itself as a leading brand in the home computer space, rivaling contemporaries like Compaq and Gateway. However, toward the end of the decade, the company struggled financially. Stiff competition in the market and decreasing sales became challenging obstacles.

In 2008, facing continuing financial difficulties, Packard Bell was acquired by Acer, a Taiwanese electronics company, for $709 million. Despite the acquisition, Acer continued to use the Packard Bell brand for some of its computer models, particularly those aimed at European consumers.

However, the acquisition also marked the end of Packard Bell’s independent operations. The company ceased producing its products and eventually became independent in 2008. Though it is dormant, the Packard Bell brand remains under Acer’s ownership.
