Tandberg: Brand overview
Founded: | 1933 – 19 April 2010 |
Founder: | Vebjørn Tandberg |
Headquarters: | Lysaker, Norway |
In Oslo, Norway, Tandberg was established in 1933 by Vebjørn Tandberg, initially under Tandbergs Radiofabrikk. Initially, its production focused on radios and television sets, which continued until the 1960s.
Entering the video conferencing arena in the 1990s, Tandberg shifted gears towards developing codec equipment and software solutions, paving the way for its emergence as a dominant provider of video conferencing endpoints, network infrastructure, and management software.
In a strategic move, Cisco acquired Tandberg in 2010 for a whopping $3.4 billion, integrating it into Cisco’s collaborative technology portfolio. Despite the acquisition, the Tandberg brand name has yet to be entirely phased out. Cisco continues to market specific video conferencing equipment, including the SX and EX series and TelePresence, under the Tandberg brand.
While featuring numerous players, the video conferencing market is largely dominated by tech giants such as Cisco, Polycom, and Huawei. Tandberg, transforming from a Norwegian consumer electronics firm to an innovator in enterprise video communications, holds a significant legacy in the B2B video conferencing space. The name Tandberg continues to evoke recognition and respect in the industry.
