Arizona State University was originally located in Tempe and was called Territorial Normal School. He trained teachers for the local area. The building area was allocated to him by the Wilson family – George and Martha. It was a small plot of 20 acres that housed a single building with four rooms. On the current emblem of the university, all elements are structured into two groups: graphic and text. On the left side, there is an icon consisting of three letters – “A,” “S,” and “U,” from behind which the sun is visible. The central circle is behind the middle letter, and rays half penetrate the right and left ones. Moreover, “S” divides the luminary into two parts – like a drop-shaped sign of yin and yang. The “A” and “U” have miniature serifs. These are protrusions placed on opposite sides: top left and bottom right.

The form of the seal is a traditional rondel, where several circular stripes are marked, tapering towards the center. The widest ring is located on the outer edge and contains the full name of the educational institution, as well as the year of its appearance: “Arizona State University” and “1885”. The letters are large, thin, straight, and decorated with serifs. The number “5” has a miniature loop transitioning from the vertical stroke to the semicircular element.
A smaller ring follows this. It is not as wide as the first and consists of narrow edging stripes, between which is the phrase “Great seal of the state of Arizona.” The year is also indicated there – “1912”. It is separated from the text by two stars. A classic shield occupies the central part with a wide top and a narrowed bottom. It depicts the whole picture: the Arizona mountains, canyons, the entrance to the cave, and next to him is a miner with a pick and a shovel. At the same time, the figure bears little resemblance to an ordinary worker – a person who looks like a researcher. Because of the high peaks in the background, the sun peeps out, spreading long rays around it. Above, in a rectangular frame, is the motto: “Ditat Deus.” The edge of the seal is decorated with sharp spikes arranged in the form of a closed ring.

Font and Colors
The print and the logographically have nothing in common. They are united only by the corporate color – burgundy. Otherwise, they have different styles: the print is associated with historical roots, and the emblem is associated with modernity.
For the text, the ASU management chose an individual typeface based on the Perpetua Titling Regular font. But it is not he who is of great interest, but the color scheme, which was officially approved almost ten years after the university’s opening. We are talking about a combination of gold with burgundy and white: the golden shade of Pantone 123 was chosen in 1896, and the burgundy Pantone 208 and neutral white were added by the administration of the university later – in 1898.
