Meaning and History

Bape Shark Symbol

What is Bape Shark?

Sweatshirt from the Japanese company A Bathing Ape, the hood of which is made in the form of an open mouth of a shark. It was developed in 2004.

The history of the Bape shark line began with the creation of a hoodie. The shark on the hood, bright colors, and a zipper fastened to the top made the thing very popular. And gradually, other types of clothing appeared under the logo.

The emblem of the hoodie has stayed the same since its inception. It is quite bright and, at the same time, minimalistic. It consists only of an image, which conveys everything without words in the opinion of the creator. The shark’s open mouth shows a lot of sharp white teeth and two round eyes looking up.

However, physiognomy does not carry the message of aggression or anger. All elements convey the emotion of fear. Why a shark, and where does the fear come from? To understand the meaning of the frightened shark in the logo, you need to know the company’s general philosophy.

Animal personification is popular in Japanese culture. People dressing in costumes of a fox, a mouse, or a cat or wearing individual elements of the image are quite common. It is believed that the animal transmits certain traits to a person, increasing his capabilities and strength.

The parent company, A Bathing Ape, which produces hoodies, also uses this philosophy. Its logo is the head of a monkey. The idea of connecting with the animal world continues in all company lines.

However, like the main title, the characters in A Bathing Ape’s clothes are not related to real animals but to images in films, anime, or cartoons. Growing up, brand founder Tomoaki Nagao spent a lot of time alone playing with toys. And it played a role in his perception of the world. The firm often collaborates with Marvel, Disney, and Nintendo and uses their well-known characters.

The frightened shark featured in the logo is possibly Lenny’s character from Shark Tale. The hoodie and the Disney cartoon saw the light of day in 2004. The peculiarity of Lenny is that he did not want to eat anyone; he was frightened by the bloodthirstiness of his brothers. Therefore, the logo does not convey the aggressiveness of the shark to the buyer. Wearing clothes with this character is safe for a person. Lenny endows the carrier with a wonderful sense of humor and kindness and makes him one of the representatives of the street “brotherhood.”

According to Tomoaki Nigo, BAPE is a story about a monkey bathing in warm water (A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water) and is a nod to the line’s audience. After all, only the youth of Japan remains in the bath until the water is barely warm. All BAPE models exemplify street fashion created for boys and girls who spend time in companies and parties.

The logo takes the buyer to the fictional world of animation and fantasy, close to the youth. It was this approach that made Bape shark the company’s bestseller. The demand for hoodies with this sign has remained the same for 18 years.

The frequent use of camouflage in colors is because the image of a shark with an open mouth was sometimes applied to military aircraft. But there, the shark had a more warlike appearance.
