A Bathing Ape began on April 1, 1993, when Tomoaki Nagao, known as Nigo, borrowed 4 million yen from a friend and opened NOWHERE in Tokyo’s Ura-Harajuku district with Jun Takahashi. The shop, named after The Beatles’ song “Nowhere Man,” sold imported American streetwear, sneakers, and vintage pieces. At the same time, Nigo worked with graphic designer SK8THING on his own label.
The name A Bathing Ape came from a Japanese phrase about an ape relaxing in warm water and from the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. Nigo shortened it to BAPE, while SK8THING created the ape-head graphics, camouflage patterns, and type style. Early production was tiny: about 50 hand-printed T-shirts a week. Half were sold in NOWHERE, and half were given to DJs, rappers, and stylists in Tokyo.
In the mid-1990s, BAPE introduced the Shark Hoodie, with a full-zip hood and shark teeth across the face. Its design was inspired by nose art on World War II fighter planes, including the Flying Tigers. The hoodie became one of the brand’s most recognizable products. By the late 1990s, BAPE dominated Japan’s streetwear scene, supported by figures around Ura-Harajuku, including Hiroshi Fujiwara.
In 2002, Nigo released the Bapesta, a sneaker based on the Nike Air Force 1 silhouette with a star replacing the Swoosh. Pharrell Williams helped bring BAPE into U.S. hip-hop, then co-founded Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream with Nigo in 2003. BAPE opened stores in New York and Los Angeles in 2005. After debt reached about 2.5 billion yen, Nigo sold the brand to Hong Kong’s I.T Group in 2011.
