The Boy Scout logo reflects purposefulness, confidence, courage, and pride in the country, as the organization’s main objective is to develop physically strong, resourceful children. The emblem fosters the right atmosphere and encourages members not to retreat in the face of difficulties, but to overcome them skillfully.
Today, the Scouting Organization in America has about 2 million members. Since its organization, the movement has included more than 110 million people at various times.
The global organization includes more than 50 million people in 172 countries. In each state, the Boy Scout emblem has its own details, but each necessarily contains the main elements of the overall logo.
Meaning and History
The Scout organization began in 1907 in England. At an experimental camp, 20 boys learned the basics of survival in the wild and exploration through a special program. Based on this experience, Robert Baden-Powell published his book Scouting for Boys. The first edition’s success marked the beginning of a rapidly growing movement. As early as 1909, 11,000 members attended the first meeting of scouts.
1910 is considered the year the organization was founded in the United States. In 1920, America was already represented by a large delegation at the First World Jamboree. In the 1930s, the American movement developed rapidly. Patrons bought and donated plots of land in different states, where they organized the first training centers. In the 1940s and 1960s, the rules for assigning ranks changed, and the minimum age for boys to join the organization was lowered. In the 1970s and 1980s, the scout organization was reoriented. The new handbook focuses less on survival skills and behavior in the wild and more on socially relevant knowledge. Prevention of drug use, socialization of people with disabilities, etc., have become important elements. From the 1990s to the present day, the World Scout Organization and its Americas have been among the most influential movements for children and adolescents worldwide.
Old
In 1908, Lord Baden-Powell first used the fleur-de-lis as part of the Scouts’ emblem. In 1909, two five-pointed stars appeared on the emblem.
The American organization used these basic elements in its emblem. Each symbol on this sign has its meaning:
- The left petal of the fleur-de-lis signifies service to others.
- The middle petal signifies service to God;
- The right petal signifies loyalty and devotion to the Scout Law.
Thus, the fleur-de-lis embodies all the basic principles of the Scouts.
The left and right petals feature five-pointed stars. Their meaning is Truth and Knowledge. These symbols are common to most organizations and represent the foundation and laws by which they operate. In the old logo, the main elements had a specific shade of yellow, reminiscent of bronze. After all, bronze arrowhead badges were awarded to the best scouts.
The eagle symbolizes the freedom of the United States of America. It is featured on the US National Emblem. In the old logo, the eagle was brown. The head and tail were white. In the old version, the bird was carefully drawn. All elements of the head, wings, and paws were highlighted with lines.
The shield that covers the eagle symbolizes the Scouts’ willingness to defend this freedom. The shield features elements of the American flag.
The embroidered emblem (chevron) looked three-dimensional and looked like a real bronze badge in this form.
New
The symbols on the organization’s new logo have not changed. Their outlines, drawings, and colors have changed.
The new version has no yellow or brown. Only red, white, and blue remain. The stash took on a clear outline. The drawing is more modern.
The lily’s color has been changed to white. The wide contour became bright scarlet. The stars turned solid red. The eagle’s outlines became schematic. The bird’s color was changed to blue. The fill is homogeneous, with no individual details highlighted; only the head is white. The shield outlines have also been simplified. The top curve is gone.
Font and Colors
Each color in a modern logo has its meaning. Overall, the emblem matches the American flag’s colors as closely as possible. The organization uses other shades and has strictly defined colors:
- Red represents courage; it also symbolizes endurance and readiness for action.
- Blue is the color of justice. Represents vigilance and attention;
- White represents purity and innocence.
This combination best reflects the values and aspirations of the scout organization’s members.
Colors used in the new emblem:
- Red – Pantone 186;
- Blue – Pantone 294 C;
- White.
Certain colors also have a form and all the distinctive signs of organization members.
