Purposefulness, confidence, courage, pride for the country – everything is reflected in the Boy Scout logo because this organization’s main objective is to bring up physically developed and resourceful children. And the emblem supports the right atmosphere and is an excuse not to retreat in the face of difficulties, skillfully overcoming them.

Meaning and History

The history of the Scout organization began in 1907 in England. In the experimental camp, 20 boys were taught the basics of survival in nature, exploration, according to a special program. Based on this experience, Robert Baden-Powell published his book Scouting for Boys. The first edition’s success was the beginning of a whole movement that is rapidly developing and will continue to develop in the future. Already in 1909, 11,000 members came to the first meeting of scouts.

1910 is considered the year the organization was founded in the United States. In 1920, America was already represented by a large delegation at the First World Jamboree. In the 1930s, the American movement developed rapidly. Patrons buy and donate plots of land in different states, where the first training centers are organized. In the 1940s and 1960s, some changes took place in the rules for assigning ranks, and the age for boys to join the organization was reduced. In the 1970s and 1980s, the scout organization was reorientated. The new handbook focuses less on survival skills and behavior in the wild and more on socially relevant knowledge. Prevention of drug use, socialization of people with disabilities, etc., have become important elements. From the 1990s to the present day, the World Scout Organization and its Americas have been one of the most influential movements for children and adolescents in the world.

Old

In 1908, Lord Baden-Powell first used the fleur-de-lis in the emblem of the Scouts. In 1909, two five-pointed stars appeared on the emblem.

The American organization used these basic elements in its emblem. Each symbol on this sign has its meaning:

• The left petal of the fleur-de-lis signifies service to others;
• Middle petal – service to God;
• Right petal – loyalty and devotion to the laws of the scouts.

Thus, the fleur-de-lis combined all the basic laws of Scouts.

On the left and right petals are five-pointed stars. Their meaning is Truth and Knowledge. These symbols are common to most organizations and represent the foundation and laws by which that organization lives. In the old logo, the main elements had a specific shade of yellow, reminiscent of bronze. After all, the bronze badges in the form of an arrowhead were awarded to the best scouts.

The eagle is a symbol of the freedom of the United States of America. It is featured on the US National Emblem. In the old logo, the eagle had the traditional brown color. The head and tail were white. In the old version, the bird was carefully drawn. All elements of the head, wings, paws were highlighted with lines.

The shield that covers the eagle symbolizes the willingness of the Scouts to defend this freedom. The shield features elements of the American flag.

The embroidered emblem (chevron) looked three-dimensional and looked like a real bronze badge in this form.

New

The symbols on the organization’s new logo have not changed. Their outlines, drawing, and colors have changed.

The new version does not have yellow and brown colors. Only red, white and blue remained. The stash took on a clear outline. The drawing is more modern.

The color of the lily has been changed to white. The wide contour has acquired a bright scarlet color. The stars turned solid red. The outlines of the eagle became schematic. The color of the bird was changed to blue. The fill is homogeneous, without highlighting individual details; only the head is highlighted in white. The outlines of the shield have also been simplified. The top curve is gone.

Font and Colors

Each color in a modern logo has its meaning. In terms of the overall palette, the emblem overlaps as much as possible with the colors of the American flag. The organization uses other shades and has strictly defined colors:

• Red is the color of courage; it also symbolizes endurance and readiness for action;
• Blue is the color of justice. Represents vigilance, attention;
• White is the color of purity and innocence.

This combination maximally reflects the life values ​​and aspirations of the members of the scout organization.

Colors used in the new emblem:

• Red – Pantone 186;
• Blue – Pantone 294 C;
• White.

Certain colors also have a form and all the distinctive signs of organization members.
