Lanchester Motor Company
The British car brand Lanchester Motor Company was founded in 1895 by Frederick William Lanchester in Birmingham, UK. It left a significant mark on the history of the automobile industry as one of the first companies to see the automobile not only as a technical means but also as an object of art, an effective way to demonstrate style, beauty, and perfection. The 1931 merger with Daimler-Benz enabled production expansion. However, in 1955, Jaguar Cars acquired the brand, and in 2008, India’s Tata Motors became its owner.
Lancia Automobiles S.p.A.
The Italian automobile industry occupies a leading position worldwide. A prominent example is the automobile brand Lancia, founded in 1906 in Turin, Italy, by Vincenzo Lancia, an Italian racer, and his partner Claudio Foggolin. The company released its first car, the Lancia 18-24 HP, a year later, which would later become known as the Alpha. Since then, the model lines have been called by letters of the Greek alphabet. Constant innovation and leadership in sports drove the brand’s popularity.
Land Rover
The world-famous British company Land Rover introduced its all-wheel-drive SUVs. The Willys brothers founded the brand in 1948; the company began producing models based on the Willys car. The Rover Company, founded in 1887 by John Kemp Starley and William Sutton, produced automobiles at its facilities. In 2008, Tata Motors acquired the brand. In 2018, the company’s management launched a new project under the Cortex brand to create a line of self-driving robot cars for off-road use and in challenging weather conditions.
Laraki Automobiles SA
Moroccan automakers have also contributed to the global automotive industry. Entrepreneur and designer Abdeslam Laraki founded the Laraki Automobiles SA brand in 1999 in Casablanca, Morocco. Abdeslam Laraki turned his passion for automobiles into a business exporting them to his country. But his desire to design a car led to the Laraki Fulgura, unveiled at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. Three years later, it appeared in a slightly modified body design. The company has created and produced three sports car models: the Laraki Fulgura, the 2005 Borac, and the 2013 Epitome.
Laurin & Klement
Czech automobile manufacturer Laurin & Klement, founded in 1895 by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, was one of the most famous brands in Mladá Boleslav, Austria-Hungary. The company began producing Slavia bicycles and motorcycles. The first automobile, the Voiturette Type A, appeared in 1905. The development of four new successful models led to the creation of the most popular model, B. Until 1909, Laurin & Klement produced several variants of the F body: phaeton, limousine, van, Lando, omnibus, and ambulance. In 1912, the RAF factory bought the company. After the war, it began producing the Model S. A 1924 fire helped cause the brand’s collapse; Akciová společnost, dříve Škodovy závody v Plzni, now Škoda Holding, later acquired it.
Lea-Francis
The British automobile brand Lea-Francis began its career in 1895, manufacturing bicycles and motorcycles in Coventry. It first produced cars under license from Singer. But in 1919, it opened a line to design and assemble its cars from components from different manufacturers. Its models included the Hyper Supercharged Ace of Spades. In 1925, the brand began producing sports models. In 1939, the plant switched to military orders. Car production resumed in 1946. In 1954, production was stopped.
Leblanc
Swiss automobile manufacturer Leblanc, based in Zurich, first made its mark in 1999 by producing a racing sports car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It had a closed construction and a boosted engine. This model was the young brand’s first statement of its ambition to join the ranks of American manufacturers of limited-edition racing cars. The Leblanc Caroline and, later, the Leblanc Mirabeau for open-street racing were fully certified and became legal competition models.
Lexus
Japanese luxury car brand Lexus was created as a Toyota division and became a standalone brand in 1989. Its task was to produce expensive Lexus cars in series. Today, Lexus is a premium car division with sales in over 90 countries. The brand’s best-selling car was the 2014 NX crossover. In 2019, the company presented a novelty and a modern-technology achievement: the Electrified concept car, a future unmanned version.
Lightning Car Company
A representative of modern achievements in automobile construction is the British Lightning Car Company, founded in 2007 in Fulham (London, England). The brand is focused on creating high-performance electric sports cars. The first Lightning GT model was named Car of the Show at the 2008 London Motor Show at ExCeL.
Ligier
The Ligier brand stands out for its history as a French automaker. Sportsman and racing driver Guy Ligier founded it in 1968 in Abrest, Allier, Auvergne, France, to develop racing cars, as he called it, “for himself.” Production began with the Ligier JS2 model. The JS prefix honors Jo Schlesser, the company’s founder’s best friend, who died at the 1968 French Grand Prix while racing for the Honda team. The brand is better known as a racing team. The company has also created the JS 50 and JS RC city cars, ATVs, and the EZ-10 electric-powered unmanned van.
Lincoln
In 1917, Leland Henry founded the Lincoln Motor Company. Based in Detroit, USA, it was named after the American president. In 1922, the founder was forced to sell the company to Henry Ford, who made it a division of his brand. The brand’s first car was the 1920 Lincoln L-Series. In 1955, Lincoln introduced one of its most expensive models, the Lincoln Continental. In 1981, the brand introduced a luxury limousine, the Lincoln Town Car. From 1998 to 2002, the brand was a part of Premier Automotive Group. The company produces the presidential car, the prestigious Lincoln Navigator.
Lister Motor Company
The Lister Motor Company is known for its sporting achievements among British automakers. Brian Lister founded it in Cambridge, England, in 1954. In 1986, Lawrence Pearce bought the company and began producing modified Jaguar XJS models. He first designed the Lister Storm. In 2013, Warrantywise acquired the brand, and production of the unique sports car resumed in 2014. In the following years, production of the Lister Knobbly, Stirling Moss, Lister LFT-666, and Lister Stealth models was established.
Lloyd Cars
Lloyd Cars is a small British brand famous for using only its own components. Founded in 1936 by Roland Lloyd, the company existed until 1951. During this time, it developed two models that went into production. One was made before World War II and the other after. These were the Lloyd 350, with a single-cylinder engine, and the 650, with a two-cylinder engine and a 4-speed transmission. In 1951, the brand switched to general engineering.
Lobini
The Brazilian automobile company Lobini was created in 1999 by Jose Orlando Lobo and Fabio Birolini, after whom it was named. The company’s mission was to develop cars using modern technology. The result was the 2005 Lobini H1 sports model with a body made of high-strength fiberglass. Presented at the Salão do Automóvel 2002 exhibition, it created a sensation in the local market. In 2006, Brax Automóveis acquired the model and began producing its modifications that same year.
Local Motors
John B. Rogers founded Local Motors in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2007. The brand is focused on small-scale production. Locomobile Company of America
Locomobile Company of America is, as its name suggests, an American automobile manufacturer. It was founded in 1899 to produce self-propelled, steam-powered automobiles. Production began in Watertown, Massachusetts, from where the company moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1900. In 1903, the company began producing vehicles with internal combustion engines, and the Locomobile Model 48 stood out for its quality. The company sought to create affordable cars by using smaller equipment. In 1922, Durant Motors bought the brand.
Lola Cars
Founded in 1961 in the Netherlands, Eric Broadley established the company to develop its automotive business. Today, it is based in the British town of Huntingdon and specializes in designing and producing sports and racing cars. Starting with small Formula Junior models, the brand expanded into modified production cars required to compete in various sports series. In 2005, the A1 racing series began. In 1998, Martin Birran acquired the company.
Loremo
German automobile manufacturer Loremo was known for its prototypes, which were designed to achieve low weight, low fuel consumption, and minimal aerodynamic drag. The 2006 modification to the Loremo LS helped ensure the brand’s popularity. Founded in 2000 in Marl (Germany), the company got its name from Low Resistance Mobile. Lotec
Kurt Lotterschmid founded Lotec in 1962 in Kolbermoor, Germany. Since 1969, it has produced racing cars; since 1975, it has modified Porsche models; since 1983, it has improved the aerodynamic properties of Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari cars. In 1990, the brand developed the Lotec C1000 for a UAE tycoon. In 2004, production of the Sirius series began, which would become the basis for the brand’s most famous model, Sirius 2009.
Lotus
The British automobile manufacturer Lotus Cars Limited was founded in 1952 by Colin Chapman in Hethel (Norfolk County), United Kingdom. The brand was originally called Lotus Engineering Ltd and was based in Hornsea. The company moved premises in 1966. The brand’s Formula 1 cars repeatedly won prizes. After the founder died in 1982, the marque stagnated; in 1986, General Motors bought it, and it was sold to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. in 1993. Luxgen Motor Co.
Taiwanese automaker Luxgen, a subsidiary of Yulon Motor, was established in 2008 to produce licensed Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles for the Taiwanese auto market.
