S&M Motor
S&M Motor Companion was an American automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, founded by Edward E. Strobel and Walter C. Martin in 1912. R.C. Aland was hired to develop their exterior design. Difficulties arose from the very beginning of the work. Announcing the launch in 1912, they did not begin until 1913. Forty cars of 48 models were built in the following variants: five- and seven-seat touring type, two- and four-seat roadsters, and a seven-seat sedan. In 1914, the company went bankrupt. From its remnants, George Benham founded the Benham Manufacturing Company.
Saab
A well-known global automaker, the Swedish brand Saab (an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget) began as an airline. It was founded in 1937 and introduced its first cars, created in Linköping in 1939. In 1969, the brand was merged with Scania, a merger that continued until 1995. In 1989, General Motors became the controlling company and fully absorbed it in 2000. In 2010, Saab acquired the Dutch Spyker. In 2012, it ceded the brand to National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), resuming production in 2013.
SAIC
SAIC Motor Corporation is the largest state-owned automobile company, formed in 1997. It is located in Shanghai, China. The main shareholder is Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (Group). It occupies 100th place on the Forbes Global 2000 list. The brand’s history began in 1984 with the creation of its predecessor, the Shanghai Automobile & Tractor Company, which was subordinated to the municipality. In 2004, the brand owned the rights to the Rover 25, Rover 75, and sporty MG TF models. In 2007, it merged with Nanjing Automobile Corporation.
SAIPA
The Iranian automobile manufacturer SAIPA was founded in 1966 and is headquartered in Tehran, Iran. The company’s name is an abbreviation of its French designation, Société Anonyme Iranienne de Production Automobile. The company was established to assemble French Citroen models for the Iranian domestic market. The latter had a 75% stake in the company’s capital. Korean cars, trucks, and buses come from the company’s warehouses. However, the engine and several cars in its design are at the heart of the brand.
Saleen
The American automobile company Saleen, Incorporated in Corona, California, was founded in 1983 by Steve Saleen, a successful auto racer. The brand is known as a successful tuning and racing company. Its first car was a tuned Ford Mustang. In 1998, the Ford Explorer XLT was finalized, resulting in the Explorer XP8 model. Since 2000, the brand has produced its sports road cars: the Saleen S7, S7R-type GT-1, and S7 Twin Turbo Competition. Today, the company is tuning models – General Motors and Toyota.
Salmson
Salmson, or Société des Moteurs Salmson, is a 1890 French brand of engines, airplanes, and automobiles with a long history. The founder of the company, Emile Salmson, established the eponymous factory that produced electric pumps and compressors for the defense and railway industries. In 1918, the company became known as “Emil Salmson and Company,” expanding the product line. After World War I, the production of bodies and automobiles began. In 1919, the company produced six GNs. From 1947 to 1957, before the automobile division closed, the G72 Randonee and G85 2300S were produced.
Samson Motorworks
Samson Motorworks of Meadow Vista, California, aims to create unique, original, and sometimes funny transportation devices. Their goal is to create environmentally friendly yet easy-to-transport and use technology and increase speed. One of the company’s most popular ideas is the Samson Switchblade road plane, which is under development. It envisions it being transportable as a kit, with the assembly available to any owner.
San Motors
San Motors Limited, an Indian automobile company, was established in 1998 in Mahadevapur, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. This brand has revolutionized the Indian auto industry. Before its introduction, the niche for motorsport enthusiasts was virtually unfilled. Today, the brand offers the San Storm 1.2 sports model. Powered by a 60 hp Renault engine, the Storm embodies the joy of a fast, comfortable ride, amazing fuel efficiency, and stylish design. The company’s assembly plant is located in Goa, India. Products are supplied to Nepal, Cyprus, Malta, Bermuda, and the UK.
San Giorgio
In 1905, an automobile company was founded in Italy to produce licensed Napier-branded cars. Its founder was the famous racing driver Arthur MacDonald, who directly participated in races in this racing car model. Within four years, in 1909, the brand was closed; the company created three models equipped with engines of different power – 25, 40, and 60 hp. The chassis was manufactured at the factory in Pistoia (Italy), which was built under the license of the Parisian firm Kellner.
Sandusky Automobile Company
Sandusky Automobile Company, located in Sandusky, Ohio, USA, was founded in 1902 by James J. Hind, an ardent proponent of small, affordable automobiles. His ideas strongly influenced Henry Ford, who was then only an engineer. The model released by the brand in 1903 was an open, two-person mini-car. The installed single-cylinder water-cooled engine produced 5 hp. In 1904, the model was re-equipped with a seven-horsepower engine. The next Courier had a steering wheel. Courier F 1905, a two-seater roadster, already had front and rear speeds.
Santana Motor, SA
Santana Motor was a Spanish automobile manufacturer. The brand was founded by the Spanish government in 1954 and was headquartered in Linares, Jaén Province, Spain. The company produced agricultural machinery. Its name was Metalúrgica de Santa Ana, SA. In 1961, production of licensed Land Rovers began at the Santana plant. Land Rover revoked the license in 1989. Sales began under its brand name. In 1985, an agreement was signed with Suzuki. In 1995, Junta de Andalucía bought out Suzuki. The brand began experiencing difficulties, leading to its closure in 2011.
Saturn
In 1985, the American concern General Motors founded the Saturn division, which produced revolutionary cars. The brand was founded in 1983, and in 1984, the first car under the brand was released and immediately became popular. However, the realization fell short of expectations due to the market’s overall decline. 1996 Saturn EV1, the first electric car of this series, was developed. But in 2005, they were discontinued. In 2000, production of Saturn L-series cars began. The production of new models continued until 2010, when the brand was discontinued.
Sauber
Sauber Motorsport AG is a sports-car, racing-car, and engine manufacturer based in Hinwil, Switzerland, founded in 1970 by Peter Sauber. The company produced chassis for Mercedes-Benz. The brand’s most successful models are the Sauber Mercedes C9 and Sauber C12, powered by the Sauber LH10. In 1994, the company withdrew from Mercedes-Benz. Since 2005, it has been a division of BMW. In 2009, the brand became independent and prepared the Sauber C29. 2017 – contract with Alfa Romeo after the founder’s departure. In 2019, became Alfa Romeo Racing.
Saxon Motor Car Company
The Saxon Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, was the seventh-largest automobile company in the United States from 1914 to 1922. It produced 28,000 vehicles during this period. The first was a small two-seat car with two gears and a four-cylinder Ferro engine, produced in 7,000 units in the first year alone. In 1919, the sedan appeared. The Duplex ’20 model had a different engine design. In 1921, the company moved to Ypsilanti, Michigan, but things did not improve. It closed in 1923.
Sbarro
The Swiss company Sbarro, founded in 1971 by Franco Sbarro, was a brand that produced one-off cars. It created replicas and sports cars. Its first car was the Lola T70. It created replicas – BMW 328, Ford GT40, Bugatti Royale, and Mercedes-Benz 540K. One of the significant models was the Tiger, in which the engine was placed in the middle. The Stash and Challenge coupe and convertible (2+2 variants) were also famous. Its list includes many bespoke replicas.
Scania
Based in Södertälje, Sweden, Scania AB is known worldwide for its heavy-duty truck, bus, and marine engine products. Founded back in 1891, it began producing buses in 1920. Over time, the company’s success has only increased. In the 1990s, a series of 12-meter modular omnibuses appeared. In 2005, it produced more than 52,000 trucks and about 6,000 buses. In 2011, the company went public. Volkswagen AG and MAN became its shareholders. In 2015, Volkswagen bought all ownership rights to the brand.
SCAP
Launay and Margarita founded Société de Construction Automobile Parisienne (SCAP) in 1912 to produce aircraft engines for Hispano-Suiza and automobiles. The headquarters were located in Paris, Courbevoie, and Boulogne-Billancourt. The first car takes into account the vehicle’s various defects. Only the best components are used for assembly. The car’s design makes it simpler and easier to repair than similar products. After World War I, the Type L was produced. Sport models were produced. The brand was closed in 1929.
Schacht
In 1904, two enthusiastic brothers, William and Gustav Schacht, founded an automobile manufacturing company in Cincinnati (Ohio, USA). The company produced several cars, trucks, and fire trucks. The automobiles were self-propelled, small-displacement type K wagons. They were produced until 1914. At that time, the company was renamed GA Schacht Motor Truck Company and continued producing specialty cars and trucks until 1940.
Scion
A subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation, the Scion brand was founded in 2002 to introduce the company’s products to the American market. The company’s office was located in Torrance, California, USA. Throughout its history, the company has produced several sports cars, coupes, sedans, and hatchbacks. The first were the Scion xA and Scion xB, based on the Toyota Yaris. The Scion tC, launched in 2005, debuted in the United States in 2006. In 2015, there were the Scion iA and Scion iM, which were redesigned Mazda 2 sedans. However, in 2016, the parent company shut down the brand.
Scioneri
In 1943, Antonio Scioneri from the Italian town of Piemonte-a-Savigliano founded a workshop to make household appliances and repair broken-down cars. In 1951, he began assembling car bodies. In 1957, a model intermediate between a sedan and a coupe was based on the Fiat 1100. The last major overhaul was in 1969. Valentina, Queen, Cinquecento, Uno, and Tipo were created. The company moves only to internal modification and tuning. Improving and equipping variants of the standard Fiat became the brand’s main goal for the next 20 years.
Scripps Booth Detroit
Scripps Booth Detroit is an American automobile manufacturing company founded by James Scripps Booth in 1913 in Detroit, Michigan. Scripps Booth is known for developing the American Bi-Autogo bicycle car. The brand created premium automobiles. In 1926, it merged with Sterling Motor Company and was renamed Scripps-Booth Corporation. William C. Durant, the founder of Sterling Motor, was also the founder of Chevrolet, part of General Motors. He initiated the purchase of the new brand. However, in 1923, GM stopped producing models under the Scripps brand.
Searchmont Motor Company
The American automaker from Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Searchmont Motor Company, left the Keystone Motor Company after gaining independence in 1900. Subcompact Runabout cars for two passengers remained in production for the newly formed brand. Until 1902, they were called Searchmont Wagonette. A year earlier, a modification with a ten-horsepower engine was created. In 1902, there were two cars, Type 3 and Type IV. From 1907 to 1907, 7 models were produced. In 1904, plans were made to produce the 8th one, but bankruptcy prevented it.
SEAT S.A.
The Spanish company Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo (SEAT S.A.) is one of the most prominent representatives of the Spanish automobile industry. It was founded in 1950 by the Italian brand Fiat. In Spain, the brand is based in Barcelona, in Martorel. In 1953, SEAT produced its first automobile. Twenty-one years later, the two millionth SEAT car saw the light of day. In 1980, the parent company stopped financing the company, ending its participation. In 1982, the brand entered into a cooperation agreement with Volkswagen AG. In 1990, the brand was fully acquired by the German concern.
SeAZ
SeAZ, or PJSC “Serpukhov Automobile Plant,” has a rich history dating back to the 39th year of the 20th century and is based on LLC “Centrotorg.” Located in Serpukhov, Moscow region, then the USSR, and today Russia, this brand is known for manufacturing the Soviet motorcycle SMZ. In 1995, production of the small-capacity car Oka began. The enterprise was renamed the automobile. After 11 years, a modernized model, SeAZ-11116, was released. However, the 2008 crisis caused the conveyor belt to stop. In 2013, the production was closed.
Sebring-Vanguard
The American brand Sebring-Vanguard, located in Sebring, Florida, developed and produced electric cars in the 1970s. It was founded by Robert G. Beaumont, who, together with designer Jim Muir, developed his world-famous CitiCar. The Vanguard coupe, produced from 1974 to 1977, answered the fuel crisis. By 1976, the brand had become the 6th-most-famous automobile manufacturer in the United States. However, in 1977, the company was acquired by Commuter Vehicles, Inc., which continued to produce the Comuta-Car and Comuta-Van from 1979 to 1982.
Sebring International
Britain is famous for its sports car brands, among which Sebring International, based in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, stands out. Its name is symbolically linked to the Sebring International Raceway (SIR) in the United States. Founded in 1994, the company is known for its open-top sports cars across the SX, TMX, MXR, and ZX model lines. They differ in the body material, whether metal or fiberglass. Regarding styling, the cars gravitate toward the 1959-67 Austin-Healey 3000 classic that won the SIR competition. In 2021, the brand was sold to Vital Spark Group Ltd.
Secma
French recreational vehicle and ATV manufacturer Secma was founded in 1995 by Daniel Renard, who had worked at Automobiles ERAD since 1975. The first Secma vehicle appeared in 1995 and was designed according to the founder’s wishes. It was simple and affordable. In 2009, a fire destroyed the factory, necessitating relocation. In 2012, the brand’s flagship models, the Secma F16 and the Secma Fun Lander, were launched. The Secma F16 Turbo model was unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. In 2017, the Fun Bugg model with the highest ground clearance was introduced.
Selden
In 1906, the Selden Motor Vehicle Company was founded in Rochester, New York, USA. This year, its founder, George Selden, bought the Buffalo Gasoline Motor Company and renamed it. In 1907, the Model 28 was introduced with a four-cylinder engine producing 30 horsepower. Eight hundred cars were sold in one year. In 1911, the company lost a lawsuit to Ford, and a fire destroyed more than half of the company. In 1914, the brand was renamed Selden Truck Sales Corporation and switched to trucks. After George died in 1922, the company was absorbed by Bethlehem Truck Company in 1930.
Service Motor Trucks Company
Service Motor Truck Company was an American automobile manufacturer based in Wabash, Indiana. It was founded in 1911 by the Service Motor Car Company of Wabash and was renamed in 1914. Its cars had an original and recognizable logo, such as a red pyramid on the hood. The brand had dealerships in Motor Row, Chicago, and New York. A reorganization in 1923 led to the renaming of Service Motors Inc. to the name of the manufactured products. In 1927, the brand was sold to Relay, which closed in 1932.
Shandong Huoyun
The Chinese manufacturer of high-quality electric cars, parts, and components for this type of vehicle is Shandong Huoyun Electric Car Co, Ltd, founded in 2001. The company is in the Linzi District of Zibo City, Shandong Province, China. The company exports its products to Australia, India, South Korea, New Zealand, and the UK. Shanghai Maple (SMA)
Fengjing (Shanghai, China) is the headquarters of Shanghai Maple Automobiles (SMA), a Chinese automobile company founded in 2000 that produces Huapu (Maple) cars. The brand opened a subsidiary, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, turning into a holding company that Geely took notice of. In 2003, the brand launched its first car, based on the 1990 Citroen ZX. In 2005, the Maple Marindo car was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In 2007, deliveries of the C51 and C52 sedans to Egypt began, and the R80 hatchback and R81 sedans to Russia and Chile. In 2008, Geely incorporated the brand into its lineup. In 2010, it became independent. In 2013, the brand merged with Zhejiang Kandi Electric Vehicles Investment. In 2020, Geely and Kandi Technologies revived the brand.
Shanghai-GM
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) was founded in 1958 to manufacture a range of vehicles, including automobiles. It is the largest automobile manufacturer based in Shanghai, China. The first car was the Dongfeng-CA71, whose body was copied from the Simca VDT. After successfully launching several models in 1959, the brand was renamed Shanghai City Agricultural Machinery Manufacturing Company. Mass production began in 1964. Today, the brand plants produce agricultural machinery, motorcycles, trucks, buses, tractors, and cars.
Shelby American
Before beginning his legendary career in automotive history, the founder of the Shelby American brand, Texas native Carroll Shelby, tried his hand at many things. In 1960, after retiring from sports, he agreed with AC Cars and Ford Motor Company to develop a series of exotic sports cars, such as the Shelby Cobra and Shelby Mustang. The Shelby American brand was established in 1961 in Venice, a suburb of Los Angeles. After curtailing car production in 1970, the founder returned to it in 1982, partnering with Chrysler and restarting production of Shelby modifications. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1992.
Shelsley Cars
British automobile brand Shelsley Cars was founded in 2000 and is based in Abberley, Worcestershire, under the leadership of Peter Needham, who headed PN Needham Engineering. The company was formed to fulfill Needham’s vision of creating a car with ultra-reliable handling, maximum performance, and high levels of comfort on the track. His first car, the Shelsley T2, became just such a model. The model was designed with the need for precise, tight handling on fast, intelligent climbs in mind, as an all-weather car for both track and road.
Siata
Siata, or fully Società Italiana Auto Trasformazioni Accessori, is an Italian car tuning and manufacturing company founded by racing driver Giorgio Ambrosini in 1926. Initially, the brand resold Fiat components. After World War II, the company began manufacturing cars. Its first car was the 1948 Siata Amica. In 1950, the Daina appeared as a cardinal modification of the Fiat 1400. In 1952, the brand released its most famous series, the Siata 300BC Barchetta Sport Spider. In 1968, the Siata Spring was released as a 2-seater roadster in retro style. In 1970, the brand went bankrupt.
Sichuan Tengzhong
In 2005, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd. was established in Chengdu (PRC) and engaged in the production of road machinery and road and pier construction. In parallel, the company produced various machinery, including tank trucks, tow trucks, and heavy trucks. In 2009, the Americans’ purchase of Hummer failed due to the brand’s lack of environmental compliance in China, leading to its disappearance.
Siddeley-Deasy
The British company Siddeley-Deasy Motor Car Company Limited was based on the Deasy Motor Car Manufacturing Company Limited in the early 20th century. Signal Motor Truck Company
Signal Motor Truck Company is an automobile company from Detroit, Michigan, United States, founded in 1913. It produces vans, specialty vehicles, buses, passenger cars, and individual chassis. The necessary bodies, trailers, industrial machines, tools, and equipment can be installed. At the same time, the brand provided services for the remodeling and maintenance of its vehicles. In 1923, the brand ceased to exist.
Simca
The French automobile company Simca was founded by Ernest Losta, a leading cyclist who opened a garage in Paris and became the sole distributor of F.I.A.T. in France. In 1934, with the help of F.I.A.T., Simca (Société Industrielle de Mécanique et Carrosserie Automobile) was founded, and in 1935 it acquired a factory in Nanterre and produced the first Simca-Fiat 6CV automobile. Simplex
Simplex Automobile Company was an early 20th-century automobile manufacturer in the United States. The brand was founded in 1907 by Herman Brozel of Smith & Mabley Manufacturing in New York City. The founder’s death in 1912 led to the brand’s sale in 1913 to Goodrich, Lockhart, and Smith. Production was moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey. After purchasing the Crane Motor Car Company in 1914, the company produced cars called the Crane Model 5 and later simply Crane-Simplex. The company was acquired by Hare’s Motors, which ended Simplex.
Simpson Design
One of the American car industry representatives is Simpson Design, founded in 1978 and based in Houston, Texas. Jim Simpson founded the brand. The company develops and produces bodies and special interiors for sports models. The brand is based on the 1989 Mazda Miata MX-5 chassis. Among the company’s famous models are the Blue Ray 1, customized for SEMA in 1991, and the 1992 Blue Ray 3 show car presented at the Concorso d’Eleganza at the Villa d’Este. In 2002, the brand relocated to Clinton, Whidbey Island, Washington.
Singer
From 1900 to 1970, Singer was a British motorcycle and automobile manufacturer. The first automobile was a licensed Lea-Francis model with a horizontally mounted engine. In 1907, a vertical one was used, which influenced the overall design. In 1912, its engine was introduced. After the First World War, models with a conventional gearbox appeared in 1922, followed by the most successful Singer 848cc Junior in 1927. In 1956, the Rootes Group absorbed Singer. In the late 1960s, the last Gazelle and Vogue models were produced under this brand.
Singer Vehicle Design
Rob Dickinson founded the American company Singer Vehicle Design in 2009 to create modifications to the Porsche 911. The brand is based in Los Angeles, California. The company’s name was adopted as a tribute to Porsche’s lead engineer, Norbert Singer, in honor of the fact that the company’s founder was formerly the frontman of the band Catherine Wheel. The brand has chosen the phrase “everything matters” as its motto, which confirms its philosophy. During the company’s restructuring, the Porsche 911 was virtually unrecognizable, appearing as a coupe or Targa. To expand its operations, the brand added wristwatch sales.
Sizaire-Naudin
The French automobile brand Sizaire-Naudin was founded in 1903 by brothers Maurice and Georges Sizaire and their partner Louis Naudin in Puteaux, near Paris, France. From the beginning, cars were sold under the Sizaire-Naudin brand name. In 1905, the brand developed its engine and installed it in all models produced from that year onwards. The company’s founder was the Duc d’Hughes, whose family flag was depicted on the company logo. In 1911, 4-cylinder units began to be installed on cars. Skoda
The largest Czech automobile manufacturer, Škoda a.s., traces its history back to 1895, as a direct successor to Laurin & Klement. In 1925, it became part of Akciová společnost, dříve Škodovy závody; today, it is part of Škoda Holding. After the political system changed and privatization began in 1991. Škoda Auto became part of the Volkswagen Group. The company’s head office is located in Mladá Boleslav. Cars from this brand are sold in 100 countries worldwide. Among the brand’s most famous passenger car models are the Škoda Popular of 1933, the Škoda Felicia convertible of 1959, the Tudor, Spartak, and Octavia.
Sivax
The Japanese brand Sivax dates back to 1961, when Cuneo Shibasaki was founded as Shibasaki Kikata Seisakusho in Odamachi, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1976, it was renamed Shibasaki Wooden Mold Industry Co., Ltd., and in 2000 became Sivacs (Thailand) Co., Ltd., headquartered in Yokohama-shi, Yokohama. Slaby-Beringer
SB-Automobil-Gesellschaft mbH, a German brand for electric and combustion engine vehicles, is based in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Its founders are the design engineers Rudolf Slaby and Hermann Behringer. The company began its activities in 1919. The first was a revolutionary model designed by Rudolf, based on a self-supporting three-section plastic body. The machine was designed for disabled veterans. Among the brand’s most famous models are the gasoline-powered Slaby-Beringer Elektrowagen of 1920 and the yet-to-be-introduced Slaby-Beringer Elektrowagen of 1921. The company went bankrupt in 1924.
Smart
Founded in 1994, the German car brand Micro Compact Car, later renamed Smart, manufactures cars under the same name in Boblingen, Germany. The company’s founder is Daimler AG. The brand’s first model was released in 1997. It was exhibited at the annual International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Since 1998, the car has been produced at the French automobile plant in Ambach. The convertible was introduced in the fall of 1999. In 2007, the number of cars produced under this brand amounted to 102,660.
Smith Automobile Company
An American automobile company based in Topeka, Kansas, operated from 1902 to 1912. Its automobile designer was Terry Stafford; the company was financed by brothers Anton and Clement Smith, whose name gave the brand its name. During its existence, the three most famous models were produced under this brand: Veracity, Smith, and Great Smith. These were the first cars produced in this part of the United States. The company was closed four years after the founder left in 1908, wishing to build cars under his name.

Smith & Mabley Manufacturing Company was an American automobile manufacturer headquartered in New York City from 1900. Its founders were A. D. Proctor Smith and Carlton R. Mabley. The company was established as a CGV automobile import company. But in two years, it was licensed to produce cars under the American CGV brand. In 1903, after issue 7, car production stopped. It was resumed in 1904 under the name S & M Simplex. By 1907, the company, which produced 220 cars, underwent a complete reorganization. It was headed by Herman Brozel, who founded the Simplex Automobile Company, which produced cars under the Simplex brand.
SMS Limited
In March 2008, famous racer and businessman Steve Saleen announced the creation of another brand – SMS Limited. Saleen founded several brands, including Saleen Autosport in 1983, Saleen Productions in 1993, Saleen Speedlab in 1997, and Saleen, Inc. in 2001. The brand is focused on producing American Muscle Cars and Global Supercars to realize ideas that could not be realized at Saleen, Inc. due to Ford-imposed restrictions. The company is developing a series of signature models and ultra-high-performance cars.
Smyth Performance Inc
An American car modification company, Smyth Performance Inc. of Tiverton, Rhode Island, was founded by Mark Smyth, owner of the Factory Five Racing team. The brand’s main goal is to create complete vehicles for the most popular models, converting cars into trucks sold at affordable prices for everyday use. The main difference between such cars is the owner’s ability to self-assemble the variant, choosing its configuration according to their tastes and interests.
Sodomka
Founded in 1895 by Josef Sodomka, the company Sodomka (Carrosserie Sodomka) in the Czech town of Vysoke Myto was a carriage workshop. In 1925, they began producing bodies for chassis of various brands, including Laurin & Klement, Škoda, Aero, Praga, Tatra, Duesenberg, Mercedes, and others. The war conditions required bodies for cargo, passengers, and special transport. In 1944, passenger car production also began. However, in 1948, the company was nationalized and incorporated into Karosa.
Sono Motors
Sono Motors GmbH is one of the youngest automotive companies in Germany, developing and manufacturing solar-powered electric vehicles. Founded in 2016 by Laurin Hahn, Navina Pernsteiner, and Jona Christians in Karben, Hesse, the company is now based in Munich, Germany. The batteries, which maximize solar energy efficiency, are embedded in the plastic body panels on the roof and sides. The brand has already licensed this technology for trucks and buses. The prototype was unveiled in 2017.

Soriano-Pedroso
Soriano-Pedroso was a car brand developed and produced in Biarritz, France, from 1919 to 1924. It was invented and assembled by the Marquis de San Carlos de Pedroso and the Marquis de Ivanrei Ricardo Soriano-Scholz von Hermensdorf, both Spaniards. A Ballot power plant powered the car. Then, another model was assembled, a bicycle car. However, in the future, the company’s main products were ship propulsion systems.
Soules Motor Car Company
Soules Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of commercial vehicles based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was founded in 1905 and ceased operations three years later. During this time, it produced several models of cars and light trucks. The company was headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. Among its notable models is the 1906 Source Delivery Wagon, equipped with a two-speed transmission rated 1,500-2,000 pounds.
SPA
The 1906 Italian automobile brand SPA (Società Piemontese Automobili) of Turin was founded by Michele Ansaldi and Matteo Ceirano. In 1909, it merged with Fabbrica Ligure Automobili Genova. In 1913, it was renamed Società Ligure Piemontese Automobili and moved its headquarters to Genoa. Ceirano developed two racing models, the 28/40 HP and the 60/70 HP. Truck production began in 1908. In 1916, the founders left the company. In 1917, SPA was absorbed by Aquila Italiana. In 1923, Tipo 23, Tipo 24, and Tipo 25 were produced. In 1926, the brand was absorbed by FIAT. In 1947, it was completely discontinued.

Spartan Motors Inc
Spartan Motors Inc. is an American automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Michigan. It was founded in 1975 by George W. Sztykiel, Bill Foster, Jerry Geary, and John Knox, and went public in 1984. The company produces custom chassis for specialty and recreational vehicles, as well as transit and school buses. Sales figures in the 1980s and 90s made the company a leader in the field. The first order was from FMC for 12 fire truck chassis. Today, the number of chassis sold, including bodies, is 3,711.
Spartan Cars (UK)
Spartan Cars is a car brand founded in 1973 by Jim McIntyre in Pinkston, Derbyshire, UK. The company’s most famous product was the Spartan Treka, a 1991 Ford Fiesta Mk2-based Jeep. Specter
The British brand Specter was founded in 1996 and still exists today. During its activity, it has developed two car models. Speedster
The American Speedster brand from Panacea, Florida, was founded by Michael Akins in 1979. These vintage cars have been Akins’ lifelong passion since his days at Antique Autos of America. In the process, 2 model lines of the GW Coupe and Z-Series, as well as the new Boattail Speedster, Cord, and Phaeton, were removed from the brand’s inventory. In the early 2000s, Akins’ dream came true with the all-modern Auburn Boattail Speedster, which retained the design features of the ’30s. In addition, a 1937 model of the 810 Cord was produced under the Coffin Nose Speedster.
Speedwell Motor Car Company
Among the first American automobile manufacturers was the Speedwell Motor Car Company, founded by Pierce Davis Schenck in 1907 and headquartered in Dayton, Ohio. The first automobile was a two-door sedan, and the term “sedan” was first applied to it. Production continued at the Wright Company plant until 1914, when the owner began producing airplanes in 1910. The flood of 1913 caused irreparable damage, leading to the plant’s closing in 1914.
Spohn Coachworks
Spohn Coachworks was a German automobile company founded in 1921 by automobile designer Hermann Spohn in Ravensburg, Germany. The brand’s famous streamlined automobile, developed in 1931, had a metal base with revolutionary design elements and advanced features, such as a rear torpedo, a hidden spare-tire placement, fender lights, a bumper badge, and recessed door handles. Spohn Plastik was developed in 1955. The brand was closed in 1957.
Spyker NV
Dutch car-holding company Spyker NV was formed in 1999 by Victor Muller and Maarten de Bruijn from two companies, Spyker Cars NV and Swedish Automobile NV, in Zeewolde (Netherlands). Since 2000, the main focus of its production has been exclusive premium sports cars, the C8 Spyder and C8 Laviolette. In 2002, the C8 Double 12 S was built. In 2003, C8 Spyder T. In 2007, the brand took part in the production of the C12 Zagato. In 2010, the holding company acquired Saab Automobile from its owner, General Motors, for reproduction and redesign. Bankruptcy came in 2021.
SRT
SRT Street & Racing Technology is the American division of Chrysler, founded in 2002 in Detroit, Michigan (USA). Its task was to refine and modify existing versions of cars of the world’s most famous brands, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep, into more powerful, sporty variants. The cars were labeled SRT, with a number indicating the powertrain’s cylinder count. As a result of the ensuing crisis, the brand was discontinued in 2014.
SS Cars
In 1922, British entrepreneurs William Walmsley and William Lyons founded SS Cars in Blackpool, England. The company produced motorcycles and motorized carriages. In 1934, the brand bought Swallow Coachbuilding Limited, the manufacturer of passenger sports cars, and later liquidated it. Since this year, the brand has produced sports sedans. From 1935, a 2-seater sports car called the SS Jaguar was produced in limited numbers. This year, William Walmsley left the company. In 1945, the name was changed to Jaguar Cars Limited.
SsangYong
The South Korean automobile company SsangYong was founded in 1954 by Ha Dong-hwan Motor Company. It is headquartered in Seoul, Republic of Korea. It started with military SUVs. In 1977, the brand changed its name to Dong-A Motor. At this time, buses, trucks, and special vehicles are added. After being acquired by the Ssangyong Business Group, the brand was renamed SsangYong Motor. The company became known for the Korando Family SUV released in 1988. In late 2008, the brand filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by Mahindra & Mahindra. The company closed in 2020.
SSC (Shelby SuperCars)

St. Louis Motor Carriage Company
In 1898, George Preston Dorris and John French founded the St. Louis Motor Carriage Company, an American automobile brand. Louis Motor Carriage Company. This brand became the first automobile manufacturer in the region. The first St. Louis 1900 made its first run from St. Louis to Chicago. The 1904 line of small touring cars included the option to convert to five-seat versions. In 1905, Dorris left and started his own company. The St. Louis Motor Carriage Company continued to use its products after the latter closed in 1907.
Standard Motor Company
The Standard Motor Company, a British automobile company, was founded in Coventry, UK, in 1903 by the eminent engineer Reginald Walter Maudslay. In 1902, he and his brother manufactured marine engines at the Maudslay Motor Company. In 1903, he built three automobiles at his company. Over the following three years, three automobiles were produced each week. In 1905, a brand new car participated in a race. In 1910, a convertible was produced. In 1913, an open model S with two seats. In 1930, the Standard Swallow sports sedan was already released. Production continued until the merger with British Leyland in 1968.
Standard Fahrzeugfabrik
This German manufacturer of motorcycles and later automobiles, Standard Fahrzeugfabrik GmbH, was founded by Wilhelm Gutbrod in 1926. Car production began in 1933 in Stuttgart-Feuerbach with the subcompact Superior by Josef Ganz. The prototype Maikäfer, designed by Josef Ganz, was purchased by Wilhelm Gutbrod in 1932, after which it was closed. A year later, the body changed. In 1934, the model was modified, enlarged, and named Standard Superior 500; the documentation was seized by Hitler and sent into serial production at the established state-owned company. In 1954, the company switched to producing agricultural machinery.
Stanga
In 1949, in the Italian town of Manerbio, the Stanga brothers, Gianfranco, Sandro, and Camillo, founded a family business to produce racing cars. The brothers aimed to build cars that suited their needs by participating in races. The cars were intended to take part in the 1949 Mille Miglia. The new model assembled had a Gilco chassis, the body was borrowed from the Motta, and the engine was a Giannini with a Siata head. Until 1952, the brothers improved their cars, creating an open two-seater and several closed models.
Stanley
The Stanley Motor Carriage Company was one of the earliest manufacturers of steam cars. It was founded in 1898 by the Stanley brothers, Francis E. and Freelan O., in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. The make of the cars was Stanley Steamers. Over 200 steam cars were built in 1898, the largest production year in the United States. The brand sold its first project to Locomobile to obtain financing to start the company and develop a new engine. In 1918, Prescott Warren bought the company and closed it in 1924.
Staver
Staver Carriage Company was an American automobile company founded in 1907 in Chicago, Illinois. Its first products were characterized by high wheels and 18-20 hp. In 1909, the lineup underwent radical changes, receiving conventional wheels, four-cylinder power plants, and a body type “tourist” or “torpedo.” The cars became known as Staver Chicago or Staver-Chicago. The body and chassis were offered in high-wheeler, torpedo, and tourer versions. The engines used were four- and six-cylinder gasoline engines. Production was sold in 1914.
Steenstra GCM
The history of one of the leading Dutch automotive design centers, Steenstra GCM, dates back to 1866, when the ancestor of the current owner, designer Cor Steenstra, Mr. Gerben Steenstra, established a carriage works in Oldemarkt, the Netherlands. The family business was passed on by inheritance. Steenstra Rients went into the railroad business. However, Cornelis Steenstra decided to return to his family roots and, after working as a designer for Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Mazda, founded Steenstra GCM. In 2003, he partnered with Larry Webster to create electric supercars, developing their electrical system and battery.
Stellantis NV
To achieve savings of 4% in 2021, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and France’s Groupe PSA merged to form Stellantis NV, the world’s 4th-largest automotive multinational corporation. The name of the new brand is based on the Latin verb stellāre. The registration was made in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The company comprises 14 automotive brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram Trucks, and Vauxhall. Under the agreement, the names and logos of the company’s corporations will not be changed.
Stevens-Duryea
In 1901. J. Frank Duryea founded the Stevens-Duryea automobile manufacturing facility in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, USA. The reason for the establishment was a quarrel between brothers J. Frank and Charles Duryea had previously founded the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. In 1901, Frank developed the Runabout powerplant. The company produced 61 cars in 1902 and 483 the following year. In 1904, the Model L, a two-seat, four-speed version of the small car, was produced. In 1905, the Model R had three speeds and a five-seater. Construction and improvement of the car continued until 1923.
Steyr-Daimler-Puch
Steyr-Daimler-Puch was founded in 1864 in Austria-Hungary by brothers Josef and Franz Werndl as Josef und Franz Werndl & Comp., Waffenfabrik und Sägemühl. Firearms were produced. From 1894, Waffenrad bicycles. The first automobile was designed in 1915 by Hans Ledwinka for Steyr-Daimler-Puch as the Steyr I. The serial one became Steyr II. In 1924, the factory was named Steyr Werke AG. Ten years later, the company merged with Austro-Daimler-Puhverke, resulting in the creation of Steyr-Daimler-Puch and the beginning of production of the small-capacity Steyr, the last version of which was released in 1957 as the 2300 Sport. The Puch G model, which became known as the Mercedes-Benz G-Klasse, is particularly well known. Production was discontinued in 2001.
Stoddard-Dayton
The American automobile company Stoddard-Dayton was founded in 1912 by John W. Stoddard and his son, Charles G. Stoddard, and was based on the Dayton Motor Car Company, founded in 1905. The headquarters were located in Dayton, Ohio. The first cars appeared in the racing category in late 1905. In 1908, the Stoddard-Dayton Model K was released. In 1909, the brand founded Courier Car Co. to create an inexpensive, lightweight version of the same-name car. Among the brand’s 20 models were the Savoy, Stratford, Saybrook, Special, and the Stoddard-Dayton-Knight limousine. Acquired by the United States Motor Company in 1912, the brand ceased to exist in 1913.
Stoewer
One of the German automobile manufacturers, Stoewer, headquartered in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland), was founded in 1899 by the Stoewer brothers as Gebrüder Stoewer. The first automobile was the Großer Stoewer Motorwagen. The Stoewer G4 was built in 1908 and sold 1,070 units. In 1916, the company was reorganized as Stoewer-Werke AG. In the 1920s, it created a new class of cars, the D-types, which used six-cylinder aircraft engines. In 1936, a unified SUV was developed. The company worked for the army after it created the Stoewer Arkona limousine in 1940, and it was disbanded in 1945.
Stola
Stola was an Italian automaker founded in 1919 by Alfredo Stola. It created concept cars and mock-ups for leading automakers, including Rivoli, Piedmont, Italy. In 2004, the company was sold to the RGZ Group, which, at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, unveiled the brand’s flagship model, the Phalcon, a two-door coupe with a one-piece windshield that transitions to the rear. In 2014, Blutec, part of the METEC group, became the owner of the company.
Studiotorino
Studiotorino is one of the leading Italian companies in contemporary automotive design. Founded in 2005 in Rivoli (Piedmont, Italy) by the grandchildren of the famous Alfredo Stola, the founder of the company named after Alfredo, and Maria Paola Stola, together with Marco Goffi, they continue the family tradition by creating new bodies and new car models. The brand produces its products by hand and in small quantities. The company’s first car, the RUF Studiotorino RK Spyder, won the L’auto più bella del mondo competition in March 2006 at the Palazzo Triennale in Milan.
Storero
Famous former Italian racing driver Luigi Storero pioneered the Italian automobile industry by founding Storero Fabbrica Automobili in Turin in 1912. Production utilized the founder’s designs, reflecting the founder’s vision of the modern automobile. Its models were equipped with four- and six-cylinder engines. One of the brand’s popular models was the Storero Type A 25/35 hp. 1914 model year. The company ceased to exist in 1919.
Strathmore Automobile Company
The original name of the American automaker, Strathmore Automobile Company, was International Automobile Company. Founded in 1899, it was almost immediately renamed Strathmore. The company was based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Production began immediately. The company offered both steam-powered cars and gasoline-powered models. They had a chain transmission and a control lever. Compact cars and highly sought-after vans were produced. The company closed in 1901.
Studebaker
Founded in 1852, the Studebaker Automobile Corporation is known worldwide for the products of two German brothers, Henry and Clem Studebaker. The company was located in South Bend, Indiana, USA. After 16 years, the brand was renamed Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. Its products were carts, wagons, and vans. The first automobile, a 20-horsepower wagon, was created in 1920. In 1904, the Grand Touring class cars were introduced. In the 20s, up to 180 thousand cars were produced per year. The Studebaker US6 truck is known as the base truck for the Soviet “Katyusha.” Since 1966, the company has been closed.
Stutz Motor Car Company
American automobile manufacturer Stutz Motor Car Company was founded in 1911 in Indianapolis (Indiana, USA) as Ideal Motor Car. The brand’s creators were friends Harry Clayton Stutz, the manufacturer of America’s first sports car, and Henry F. Campbell. In 1912, the Stutz race car was created. It was followed in 1914 by a redesigned BearCat model called the Stutz Bearcat. In 1913, the company was renamed the Stutz Motor Car Company after merging with the transmission manufacturer Stutz Auto Parts Company. The brand was closed in 1939.
Subaru
A well-known Japanese automaker, the Subaru brand first announced itself in 1953. Founded by Kenji Kita, it is now part of the Subaru Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of passenger and commercial vehicles. The name is purely Japanese, without traditional kanji. The brand’s first model was the P-1. The car that was produced in 1958 was called the Subaru 360. The main sports model was the Impreza WRX STI, followed by the 2010 Subaru Impreza XV. Production in 2011 alone totaled 528,234 lex and 52027 commercials.
Suminoe
Suminoe, a small Japanese company, was established in 1954 by Yutaka Katayama, a former Nissan executive. The company was based in Tokyo, Japan, and lasted only one year, producing a cheap, compact car. Yutaka Katayama designed and built a prototype two-seat Flying Feather microcar weighing 425 kilograms in his second-floor apartment. The brakes were only on the rear wheels. Suminoe Engineering Works Ltd produced this car and its interiors for Nissan. The Suminoe company closed in 1955.
Sun Motor Car
In 1916, the Sun Motor Car Company was founded in Buffalo, New York, to manufacture an automobile that lasted only two years with interruptions. It began assembling engineer Roscoe C. Hoffman’s six-cylinder automobile immediately after moving to Elkhart, Indiana. This is where automobile production took place until 1917. Four body styles were produced: sedan, roadster, and two units for 5 and 7 people. In 1917, the company was sold to Automotive Corporation of Toledo, Ohio. The brand continued to produce a two-seat roadster under the Sun brand name from 1921 through 1922.
Sunbeam
The British automobile brand Sunbeam traces its history back to 1888, when it began manufacturing bicycles and later motorcycles. Its founder is Alderman Marston. Arriving in 1889, Thomas Carton proposed to create an automobile, which he assembled that year. In 1900, he created a second one, which was a self-propelled vehicle. In 1996, Jim Price founded Superformance, an automobile company in Irvine, California, USA, to design and manufacture sports cars and build replicas. Suzuki Motor Corporation is a well-known Japanese automobile manufacturer that produced its first automobile in 1955. The company was founded by Michio Suzuki in 1909 as Suzuki Loom Works, which manufactures weaving products, motorcycles, and bicycles. Specter was a small British car brand best known for the R42 model. The project grew out of the work of Ray Christopher and GT Developments, a company known for its Ford GT40 replicas. In the early 1990s, Christopher conceived a modern mid-engine sports car in the spirit of the GT40, with an aluminum monocoque, a fiberglass body, and a Ford V8 engine.
The Spectre R42 was shown at the London Motor Show in 1993. Later, the project passed to Spectre Motors Inc., after which the car entered low-volume production in Poole, Dorset. The car received a 4.6-liter V8, a Getrag manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. The R42 was intended to serve as the road-going basis for a racing version.
