Coherent, Inc. was founded in May 1966 in Palo Alto by physicist James Hobart and a group of engineers. The first laser was built in the laundry room of one of the founders’ homes. In 1966, Coherent released the first commercial carbon dioxide laser. In 1967, the company received investments from the Rockefellers. In 1970, it held its initial public offering. In 1977, the company adopted its modern name.
The second part of the future merger, II-VI Incorporated, was founded in 1971. Carl Johnson and James Hawkey began producing optics for CO₂ lasers. In 1987, II-VI went public and began expanding its zinc selenide production.
Coherent developed actively in the 1980s. In 1981, it acquired Lambda Physik. In 1982, it purchased Laser-Optronic GmbH and launched a joint venture in Japan. In 1988, Hobart returned as CEO and carried out a restructuring. This increased productivity by 60 percent. In the 1990s, Coherent acquired Applied Laser Systems, ATx Telecom Systems, Uniphase Corporation, and Tutcore Oy. On this basis, a semiconductor division was created.
In 1996, Bernard Couillaud became CEO. In 1999, the company acquired Star Medical Technologies for $ 65 million. In the 1990s, II-VI purchased Virgo Optics, Lightning Optical, and the silicon carbide division of Litton Systems. This formed the VLOC division.
In 2003, Coherent acquired Lambda Physik. In 2004, John Ambroseo became CEO. In 2006, Excel Technology was acquired for $ 376 million. In 2012, the company acquired Lumera for $52 million. In 2015, it purchased Raydiance for $9.3 million. In 2016, Rofin-Sinar was acquired for 942 million. In 2019, the German company O.R. Lasertechnologie was added.
II-VI strengthened its position during this period. The company acquired HIGHYAG in 2007 and 2013, Photop Technologies in 2010, Oclaro facilities in 2012, Anadigics and EpiWorks in 2016, Integrated Photonics in 2017, and Finisar in 2019.
In July 2022, II-VI Incorporated completed the acquisition of Coherent Inc. and adopted the new name Coherent Corp. In February 2024, the company announced that its CEO, Vincent Mattera, would resign. In June 2024, Jim Anderson was appointed to this position.
The company is headquartered in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania. It manages more than 130 research, manufacturing, and service centers worldwide.

Coherent began operations in Palo Alto in May 1966. Physicist James Hobart and a group of engineers founded the company with $10,000 in capital. The team assembled an early carbon dioxide laser in a residential space equipped with a 220-volt outlet. Four months later, the company introduced a commercial CO₂ laser.
The name Coherent is connected to the physics of light. The English word “coherent” describes the phase alignment of light waves that forms the basis of laser operation. The original name Coherent Radiation referred to the company’s laser technology. The scientific connection remained after the company became Coherent, Inc. Under this name, it produced lasers, optics, and photonic systems.
Before 2022, the logo consisted of a circular emblem and the word COHERENT. The circle had a solid black background. Inside was a white image formed by eight rays of equal thickness. All lines shared one central point and were positioned at 45-degree intervals. The image resembled a radiation diagram or an eight-pointed star.
The horizontal ray reached the right edge of the circle. The other lines ended within the black field. The combination of the circle and rays represented light through formal geometry. The white lines appeared against the black background, while their uniform thickness kept the image visually unified.
The name COHERENT appeared on the right in black uppercase letters. The wordmark used a sans-serif typeface with angular forms and uniformly thick strokes. It occupied one line and shared a horizontal axis with the circle.
2022 – today
II-VI Incorporated completed its acquisition of Coherent, Inc. on July 1, 2022. The combined group included businesses involved in lasers, optics, semiconductors, networking systems, photonics, and engineered materials. Management announced that the entire corporation would operate under the Coherent name.
The new name drew on Coherent’s long presence in the laser industry and the meaning of the English word “coherent.” In physics, it refers to the alignment of waves. Management applied the same idea to the combination of people, technologies, and business areas within one group.
An atomic figure replaces the letter “O” in the logo. A blue circular disc is built into the word COHERENT and matches the height of the other letters. Three white oval lines with flowing curves appear inside. They intersect on different planes and form a diagram of atomic orbits.
The company associates the atom with the fundamental materials and technologies used in its products. The image covers lasers, optical components, semiconductor materials, networking technologies, and photonics. The intersecting orbits represent the combination of several technological fields. The atom occupies the position of the letter “O,” preserving the complete spelling of the name.
The remaining letters use bright blue. The uppercase sans-serif lettering has elongated proportions, thick strokes, and straight verticals. The solid letterforms complement the circular disc. A single blue color connects the atomic model with the name. The entire logo appears on one line, with the emblem incorporated into the word.
