Detroit Zoo Unveils New Logo and Brand Identity

The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) has launched a major rebranding initiative, introducing new logos and updated webpages for the Detroit Zoo, Belle Isle Nature Center, and the society itself. Two years in the making, this effort aims to present a fresh, modern, and timeless identity.

The new Detroit Zoo logo features two interlocking Os, symbolizing inclusivity and connectivity. These bold, circular shapes invite viewers into a world of storytelling and exploration, making the logo recognizable and versatile across various platforms and merchandise.

The Belle Isle Nature Center’s new logo showcases two leaf-inspired shapes. These designs represent the center’s mission to connect urban wildlife with the people of Detroit. The organic lines and green hues evoke nature and sustainability, aligning with the center’s goals.

The organization’s “Where life connects” tagline captures the DZS’s core principles. This tagline, combined with the new visual identities, emphasizes the commitment to creating meaningful connections between humans and animals and promoting environmental conservation.

A standout feature of rebranding is the Detroit Zoo’s iconic water tower redesign. The tower near Interstate 696 and Woodward Avenue will display the new zoo logo, painted with 515 gallons and wrapped in a 30-foot-tall vinyl cover. The design includes playful elements, like images of zoo animals peeking out from the Os, adding charm. This process is expected to take about two weeks.

The previous water tower artwork has been repurposed creatively. The DZS collaborated with Rebel Nell, a Detroit-based, woman-owned company, to create jewelry and accessories from the old design. This partnership preserves a piece of the zoo’s history and aligns with the organization’s sustainability values.

An 18-foot-wide photo opportunity sculpture featuring the new logo has been added. This interactive installation allows visitors to climb inside the Os, providing a memorable photo spot outside the zoo’s front gates. This sculpture is expected to become a popular attraction.

Alongside the visual rebranding, the DZS is improving its digital presence with redesigned Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center websites. These sites will offer a more user-friendly experience, with better navigation and engaging content highlighting the organization’s initiatives and educational programs. A mobile app is also developing to help visitors plan their visits and enhance their overall experience.

The new branding and digital updates reflect the DZS’s dedication to conservation and education. From fostering bonds between animals and the environment to celebrating the zoo’s rich history, the new identity aims to engage and inspire the community.
