The European People’s Party was founded on July 8, 1976, in Luxembourg, when Christian Democratic parties from Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands created a common European platform. In 1999, the EPP group became the largest force in the European Parliament with 233 seats. The party supported the EU enlargement process and the accession of Central and Eastern European states, linking its agenda to democracy and market-economy reforms in the region. In 2002, it adopted the Athens Declaration, reaffirming Christian-democratic principles and its support for European integration.
The Lisbon Treaty, in force since 2009, marked another institutional milestone for the EPP when Herman Van Rompuy became the first permanent president of the European Council. In 2014, the party won 221 seats, and Jean-Claude Juncker became president of the European Commission. Joseph Daul led the party from 2014, while the group backed austerity and fiscal discipline during the eurozone debt crisis. In 2018, Donald Tusk became president. After the 2019 elections, the EPP remained the largest group with 182 seats, and Ursula von der Leyen became Commission president.
