The Full Sail University logo embodies how a small studio transformed into a major educational institution. The university has become a place where creative minds develop skills for a successful career, from the first steps in sound recording to extensive educational programs. It has become a symbol of practical learning and growth.
Full Sail University began in 1979, when John Phelps and Gary Jones opened Full Sail Recording Workshop in Daytona Beach, Florida. The school started with a one-month course in audio production and sound engineering, taught to about 10 to 15 students in rented facilities. By 1980, the program had expanded to six months, adding live sound and music business courses.
Growth led to a move to Orlando in 1983, where the school gained larger facilities and professional equipment. It later adopted the name Center for the Recording Arts and received ACCSC accreditation in 1988. During 1989 and 1990, the curriculum expanded into media, film, and video production, while computer labs for digital editing appeared in 1994.
In 1995, the institution gained approval to award associate degrees in recording arts, digital media, film and video. Campus expansion followed in 1998 and 1999, adding classrooms, production stages, editing rooms and recording studios. Online courses began in 2003, bachelor’s degrees followed in 2005, and the university was granted status in 2007.
From 2010 onward, Full Sail invested in motion-capture studios, game development, mobile applications, film production, and virtual reality. Between 2016 and 2019, it developed internships, educational projects with WWE, and specialized laboratories with Apple. By 2023, the university had expanded programs in artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, digital marketing, and esports, including events at its Fortress arena.
