Life Financial Group: Brand overview

The Life Financial Group began with Roy Russell, who started selling life insurance in 1978 from the basement of his home in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. He was 21, newly married, and soon to become a father. The first months were difficult, and it took him nine months to earn enough for one mortgage payment.

Working with several insurance companies, Russell became concerned that some insurers looked for reasons to deny claims despite attractive policy terms. This pushed him to rethink the kind of financial business he wanted to build. In 1983, he moved the office from his basement to a professional space on High Street in Pottstown. He began studying biblical principles of money management more seriously.

In 1985, Russell received a securities license, allowing him to move beyond insurance into investment planning. While firms such as Northwestern Mutual and New York Life focused on the broader insurance market, Russell built a niche serving clients seeking financial advice shaped by Christian values. In 1986, he founded Life Institute, which held three-day seminars on biblical stewardship in churches across the United States and abroad.

In 1993, Russell earned the CFP certification after about 900 hours of study. He later added CKA, CAP, and RICP credentials. His son Timothy Russell, also holding CFP and CKA credentials, joined the business, led the investment committee, and co-hosted the “Stewardology” podcast. Based in Douglassville, Pennsylvania, the company remains a small private firm focused on asset management for Christian families and published “The Good Steward,” written by Roy and Timothy Russell.
