Medaille University was established based on Medaille College. The institution’s history dates back to 1937 when the religious community Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph created Mount Saint Joseph Teachers’ College, named after a French Jesuit missionary. Having gained university status in 2022, the institution sold part of its campus buildings to Trocaire College a few months later. By mid-summer 2023, the merger should be completed, and it will finally become part of Trocaire. Medaille’s Mavericks sports teams are expected to play under the current name in the 2023-2024 season.

Meaning and History

Medaille University Logo History

Medaille University inherited its visual identification from Medaille College. In 2022, only the inscription on the logo changed, now indicating the new status of the educational institution. Everything else – official colors, typography, and visual symbols in the form of three pentagons – remained the same. By mid-2023, the university should finally become part of Trocaire College. There is a possibility that it may cease to exist in its current form, and this could be reflected in its identity.

What is Medaille University?

Medaille University is a private educational institution located in Buffalo. It was founded in 1937 as a women’s college and was initially managed by the religious community Sisters of St. Joseph. In 1968, the institution was renamed Medaille, and in 2022 it gained university status. At the same time, the process of merging with Trocaire College began, which should be completed in 2023. This had to be done due to the insufficient number of students caused by declining birth rates.

2022 – today

Medaille University Logo

The Medaille University logo consists of three pentagons arranged side by side in a horizontal orientation. The geometric shapes have the same form and size, with all of them pointing upward. At the same time, the pentagons differ in color: one is light blue, the second is gold, and the third is dark blue. There are small gaps between them, creating a sense of freedom and movement.

These emblem elements symbolize various aspects of the university, including its values, diverse educational programs, and academic achievements. They also resemble the teeth of a crown, a sign of power, glory, and superiority. Their arrangement in a single row reflects the idea of unity and equality and the interaction between different fields of study.

Below the three-component symbol, the dark blue name Medaille University is written. It is divided into two lines and centered. Both parts of the phrase are set in the same bold sans-serif font. Only the initial letters are capitalized, while the rest are lowercase. The chosen typeface features a rounded shape and cuts at the tops of “t,” “l,” “d,” and the free end of “e.”

The Seal

Medaille University Seal Logo

The seal contains a white circle, inside which are intertwined golden Greek letters Alpha and Omega. This element connects the institution with its past, as the university was founded by a Roman Catholic community, and the combined Alpha and Omega are Christian symbols of God. Above is an arc of text reading “CURIOSITY EXCELLENCE INTEGRITY COMMUNITY.” All words are blue and separated by small dots. Below, the founding year of the institution, 1937, is indicated.

The central circle is placed within a wide dark blue ring, outlined on both sides by thin golden lines. Inside it are the inscriptions “MEDAILLE UNIVERSITY” and “BUFFALO, NEW YORK” of different colors: the former is yellow, and the latter is white.

Font and Colors

Medaille University Emblem

The institution’s name on the logo is set in a bold sans-serif font from the Interstate family, created by Tobias Frere-Jones in the 1990s. This is a reinterpreted version of the Highway Gothic typeface, which was used for inscriptions on American road signs since the late 1940s. In turn, the text on the seal is set in a font with thin serifs, resembling Thor Regular by GemFonts, MV Boli Regular by NAADHu Maldives, or FretQwik Regular by Robert Allgeyer.
