The Medaille University logo symbolizes the unity of different fields of knowledge. In addition, the emblem reflects the main principles on which the institution is founded, including a strong academic program and high standards of professional preparation for students.
Medaille University began in 1875 in Buffalo, New York, when the Sisters of Saint Joseph opened the Institute of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. It trained nuns and other women for teaching work in Catholic schools, without the authority to grant degrees.
In 1937, New York State issued a charter allowing the school to award degrees, and it became Mount Saint Joseph Teachers’ College. The institution was renamed Mount Saint Joseph College in 1964. In 1968, under Sister Alice Huber, the charter changed again. The college opened to men, women, and students outside religious orders, took the name Medaille College after Jean Pierre Medaille, and formed an independent board of trustees.
During the 1970s, enrollment grew, and new campus buildings appeared, including the Downey Science Building. In 1991, Medaille added campus housing, drawing students from Western New York and Ontario. The Kevin I. Sullivan Student Center opened in 1994, an accelerated adult program began in 1997, and the first residence hall opened in 2001, followed by a second two years later.
In 2005, Medaille joined the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and competed in NCAA Division III as the Medaille Mavericks. Its men’s soccer team went unbeaten in conference play from 2005 to 2010 and reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 in 2010. Medaille launched its first online bachelor’s program that year. In May 2022, it became Medaille University, but falling enrollment and debt led to closure on August 31, 2023. Trocaire College ended a planned takeover, while Niagara University became Medaille’s legal successor for academic records.
Meaning and History
Medaille University inherited its visual identification from Medaille College. In 2022, only the logo’s inscription changed, now indicating the educational institution’s new status. Everything else- official colors, typography, and visual symbols in the form of three pentagons- remained the same. By mid-2023, the university should finally become part of Trocaire College. It may cease to exist in its current form, and this could be reflected in its identity.

2022 – today
The Medaille University logo consists of three pentagons arranged side by side horizontally. The geometric shapes are identical in form and size, all pointing upward. At the same time, the pentagons differ in color: one is light blue, the second is gold, and the third is dark blue. There are small gaps between them, creating a sense of freedom and movement.
These emblem elements symbolize various aspects of the university, including its values, diverse educational programs, and academic achievements. They also resemble the teeth of a crown, a sign of power, glory, and superiority. Their arrangement in a single row reflects unity and equality, as well as interaction among different fields of study.
Below the three-component symbol, the dark blue name Medaille University is written. It is divided into two lines and centered. Both parts of the phrase are set in the same bold sans-serif font. Only the initial letters are capitalized, while the rest are lowercase. The chosen typeface features rounded shapes and cuts at the tops of the “t,” “l,” and “d,” and at the free end of the “e.”
The Seal
The seal contains a white circle, inside which are intertwined golden Greek letters Alpha and Omega. This element connects the institution with its past: the university was founded by a Roman Catholic community, and the combined Alpha and Omega are Christian symbols of God. Above is an arc of text reading “CURIOSITY EXCELLENCE INTEGRITY COMMUNITY.” All words are blue and separated by small dots. Below, the institution’s founding year, 1937, is indicated.
The central circle is set within a wide dark-blue ring, outlined on both sides by thin golden lines. Inside it are the inscriptions “MEDAILLE UNIVERSITY” and “BUFFALO, NEW YORK” of different colors: the former is yellow, and the latter is white.
Font and Colors
The institution’s name on the logo is set in a bold sans-serif font from the Interstate family, created by Tobias Frere-Jones in the 1990s. This is a reinterpretation of the Highway Gothic typeface, which has been used for inscriptions on American road signs since the late 1940s. In turn, the text on the seal is set in a font with thin serifs, resembling Thor Regular by GemFonts, MV Boli Regular by NAADHu Maldives, or FretQwik Regular by Robert Allgeyer.
Medaille University’s identity features three official colors: light blue, gold, and dark blue. The branding guide states that different shades should be chosen when displaying the logo on coated and uncoated paper:
- for the wordmark PMS 541 or PMS 2945;
- for the left pentagon 40% PMS 541 or 40% PMS 2945;
- for the central shape PMS 123 or PMS 109;
- for the right element 70% PMS 541 or 70% PMS 2945.
