The MSCI logo is associated with a company that calculates stock market indices, publishes analytics for investors, and helps large funds assess risk, returns, and market conditions in various countries. Behind the name lies the work of analyzing vast amounts of financial data and comparing companies and sectors. At the same time, the logo itself is perceived as a symbol of the source relied upon for capital allocation and investment performance evaluation.

MSCI: Brand overview

MSCI was established in 1968 as a project of the investment company Capital Group. The goal was to create a reliable tool for evaluating international investments. In 1969, the first index was launched, covering stocks in Europe, Australia, and Asia. Morgan Stanley became a partner in the project. The company provided analytical resources and gave the brand its name, Morgan Stanley Capital International.

In the 1970s, the company developed a network of regional and country indexes. In 1988, the first emerging markets indexes were introduced. This event became an important milestone in the development of global investing. In 1986, Morgan Stanley gained full control of the project. After that, MSCI took a leading position in the global financial infrastructure.

In 2004, Capital Group and Hellman & Friedman acquired the company. The deal resulted in the creation of a combined entity called MSCI Barra. In 2007, the company conducted an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. In the following years, MSCI expanded its analytical focus and began releasing products for real estate, hedge funds, and risk management.

In 2010, MSCI acquired RiskMetrics Group. From 2015 to 2019, the company developed factor and thematic indexes. Special attention was given to the artificial intelligence and cybersecurity sectors.

Since 2020, MSCI has focused on finance and climate analytics. ESG indexes were launched, and the companies Carbon Delta and Trove Research were acquired. These steps strengthened the company’s position in environmental impact assessment.

The company manages an index system linked to assets worth more than $13 trillion. It remains one of the key benchmarks for institutional investors and the global stock market.

What is MSCI?

An international organization that provides investment indexes and analytical solutions for stock market participants. before 2015

MSCI Logo before 2015

MSCI is one of the major names in the financial index market. The company creates and distributes international stock indexes used by investors worldwide. The name’s history is tied to “Morgan Stanley” and “Capital International.” At the same time, the early logo, used before 2015, was strict and restrained.

In 1969, “Capital International” introduced stock indexes for the international market. In 1986, “Morgan Stanley” acquired the rights to them. After the two names were combined, the name “MSCI” became an abbreviation for “Morgan Stanley Capital International.”

The early MSCI logo was a simple rectangular form in rich blue. Inside it was the abbreviation “MSCI,” set in white uppercase letters. The inscription used a classic serif typeface close to “Times New Roman” or “Garamond.”

Blue worked well for the financial sector, where trust, a businesslike tone, and careful presentation matter. The typeface had serifs.

For many years, this version accompanied MSCI in its work with institutional investors, banks, and financial analysts. It helped present the company as a source of stock index data, analytics, and calculated figures for the professional market.

2015 – 2019

MSCI Logo 2015

After the logo change, MSCI received a more modern visual identity, and the new mark was tied to themes of data, connections, and the global network.

The logo consists of 2 parts. On the left is the abbreviation “MSCI” in large dark gray letters. The typeface looks neutral and businesslike, close in style to “Gotham” or “Proxima Nova.”

To the right of the name is a circle with a thin gray grid inside. The lines form a complex pattern of diamonds and triangles, resembling a digital network or a symbolic world map. Dark blue and yellow dots are placed at different points on the grid. They vary in size and are arranged asymmetrically.

The circular grid corresponds to MSCI’s work. The company analyzes markets, collects data, and develops tools for investors worldwide.

The updated logo positions MSCI as a brand focused on global financial data.

2019 – today

MSCI Logo

MSCI slightly updated its logo without significantly altering its structure. The brand kept the previous foundation: the name on the left and the circular grid on the right. The changes primarily affected the color, not the mark’s form.

The “MSCI” inscription remained on the left side of the logo. The typeface stayed the same. It is modern, with even letter proportions, close to “Gotham” or “Proxima Nova.” On the right, the circle with a thin grid inside remained. The lines intersect, resembling a digital model of the world or a system of connections. Node dots are placed at the intersections.

The main change concerns color. The inscription shifted from dark gray to a rich dark blue. The circle, previously made with blue lines and yellow dots, became monochrome. The entire right-hand side is now executed in the same dark blue as the name itself.

The update made the mark stricter and calmer. The logo became less dependent on color accents and better suited to the financial environment, where precision, order, and data accuracy matter.
