The Sharks trace their history to the Natal Rugby Union, founded in 1890. Natal entered South African provincial rugby with a smaller player base than the inland regions and became known as the “Banana Boys,” a reference to the coastal plantations. The team competed for the Currie Cup but spent decades losing finals and remaining outside the country’s leading group.
Coach Izak van Heerden changed Natal’s playing system during the 1950s, emphasizing possession and repeated attacking phases that exhausted opposing defenses. The breakthrough came in 1990 under Ian McIntosh, when Natal defeated Northern Transvaal to win the Currie Cup. Five titles followed between 1990 and 1999, alongside the development of future Springboks.
In 1995, Natal merged with KwaZulu, prompting a new provincial identity. The rugby team adopted the Sharks name, a shark emblem, and Sharkie as its mascot. King’s Park in Durban became known as the Shark Tank. The Canterbury Crusaders ranked among the opponents responsible for the club’s Super Rugby final defeats. In 2021, the Sharks joined the United Rugby Championship, competing against clubs from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, and South Africa. During the 2023/24 season, they won the EPCR Challenge Cup, the organization’s first European club trophy.

The Coastal Sharks logo from 1995 to 1998 featured a dynamic, playful mascot named Sharkie. At the center was an anthropomorphic shark dressed in rugby gear, holding a rugby ball, which symbolized power, aggression, and fighting spirit.
Sharkie’s uniform featured monochrome stripes, predominantly black and white, that emphasized the team’s serious approach. The symbol combined athletic energy with the predator’s aggressiveness.
Below the mascot was the club name “COASTAL SHARKS,” set in bold uppercase sans-serif lettering. Although short-lived, this logo effectively conveyed the team’s athletic character.
1999 – 2022
In 1999, the club changed its name to “The Sharks” and updated its visual identity. The main image features a rugby-playing shark whose appearance has become more dynamic.
The shark received sharper contours, emphasizing an attacking stance. The black-and-white palette increased toughness and intensity, highlighting the team’s drive for victory.
The typeface also changed, becoming heavier and featuring simple sans-serif lettering, which reinforced visual stability.
Dropping “Coastal” from the name was part of a strategy to strengthen brand recognition. The aggressive new style matched the team’s competitive ambitions and pursuit of leading positions.
2022 – today
The new version of The Sharks’ logo from Durban took the form of a shield, designed to promote the team internationally and reflect its partnerships. The key distinction is the addition of the Cell C sponsor logo in the upper area of the emblem, set against a bright orange background. The final letter C in the sponsor’s name is outlined with a thin white line. It somewhat resembles a copyright symbol.
The shield is divided into two zones: orange at the top and black at the bottom. These two sections are separated by a smooth, curved boundary dividing the colors. The black background is used for the remaining elements of the emblem, emphasizing the design’s sporty style.
The club name is centered in the black field and set in uppercase letters in a strict sports typeface, similar to a College or Varsity typeface. Below is the club symbol: an anthropomorphic shark in a game uniform. The shark is depicted running, captured in motion. The character’s head is large, with teeth and a predatory gaze that emphasizes the team’s aggressive attitude. There is a fin on its back, and the character’s arms and legs are rendered humanly, including athletic shoes and a uniform. It is dressed in a black jersey and white shorts.
The lower part of the shield, which narrows to a pointed end, contains the city name Durban, also rendered in white type. The inscription is arranged in a slight downward arc, emphasizing the club’s regional status and connection to the city.
