The history of Tenaga Nasional Berhad began on September 1, 1949. On that day, the Central Electricity Board of Malaya was established. It became the foundation of the national power system. In 1965, the organization received a new name. It became known as the National Electricity Board of the States of Malaya. The company acquired small power enterprises and developed infrastructure.
The creation of the National Power Grid was an important milestone in the industry’s development. It connected power plants throughout the country. On May 4, 1988, the government of Mahathir Mohamad announced the privatization of the energy sector. On February 1, 1990, the law establishing Tenaga Nasional Berhad was adopted. It succeeded the National Electricity Board. On September 1, 1990, TNB was granted private corporation status. The state fully owned it. The company’s motto was “Penggerak Kemajuan Negara”.
By the 2000s, the company had strengthened its position as Malaysia’s largest electricity supplier. During this period, remote metering systems began to be introduced. In 2012, the company, together with Petronas, invested two billion ringgit in the construction of a gas-fired power plant and a liquefied natural gas terminal in Sabah.
In 2015, TNB received approval to build a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of two thousand megawatts. In 2018, the company entered the renewable energy market in the United Kingdom. It acquired the wind companies GVO Wind and Bluemerang Capital.
In 2021, TNB became a co-owner of the Blyth offshore wind power plant in England. Today, the company produces electricity, transformers, cables, and industrial equipment. It also exports energy to Singapore through TNB Power Generation and YTL PowerSeraya.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad adopted its current visual identity following privatization in 1990. At that time, the National Electricity Board, also known as Lembaga Letrik Negara, became the private company TNB. Before the name change, the brand’s history extended to the Central Electricity Board, established in 1949 following the consolidation of several electricity organizations in Malaya. The CEB became the National Electricity Board in 1965.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad translates from Malay as “National Energy Berhad.” “Tenaga” means “energy,” “Nasional” means “national,” and “Berhad” indicates a publicly traded company in Malaysia. The name refers to TNB’s role as the national energy supplier and a part of the country’s infrastructure.
The logo symbol represents an electric light bulb. Its outline is formed almost entirely from a single red line of uniform thickness. The heavily simplified bulb is recognizable through its rounded body and lower section, which resembles a threaded base. A red lightning bolt inside represents the generation and supply of electricity.
The company explains the light bulb through vitality and a focus on the future. The form references the letter “T” in Tenaga. Red represents energy, activity, and business drive.
The blue words TENAGA NASIONAL appear to the right of the emblem in two lines. TENAGA is placed above NASIONAL. All letters are uppercase, bold, italicized, and sans-serif. The typeface resembles Impact, with condensed forms and heavy strokes.
According to the company, the slant of the letters represents TNB’s active role in Malaysia’s development. At the same time, the bold weight conveys strength and reliability.
