Meaning and History
The basis of the university was the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, which appeared as part of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts program. Despite the name, which speaks of a bias in agriculture and mechanics, the educational institution did not conduct classes in these disciplines. It paid great attention to classical studies, applied mathematics, literature, and languages. Four years later, students also received the opportunity to study rural and military affairs, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering.
To reflect the expanded capabilities, the Texas Legislature granted the school-university status in 1963 and officially renamed it Texas A&M University. Moreover, it left its historical connection with the previous educational institution in the abbreviation AMC from the phrase Agricultural and Mechanical College. Later, two more versions of the abbreviation appeared—A&M and TAM (from Texas A&M). The latter variant is used in the emblem with the central T—ATM.

This is followed by two branches – oak (left) and laurel (right). They almost surround the center and are formed from outlines. Below is the year the university was founded – “1876”. These elements are separated by two thin lines, followed by a wide area with the actual name of the university. Texas A&M University is written in broad serif letters and bulges. There are three stars in the same field. The edging of the seal is a gear-like frame with teeth.
In addition, the school has its logo, which is the central part of the university press. The largest letter is “T.” To emphasize it, the designers combined white and burgundy. As a result, the right side of the leg and half of the top bar are much lighter than the rest. The main elements on the right and left are “A” and “M.” All letters are framed with wide rectangular serifs. The background of the sign is simple and neutral white.

All the university’s symbols are based on its name. In early versions, the signs had an elaborate shape with curly serifs. In later versions, even strict and geometrically proportional letters appeared.
The Texas A&M identity provides several typefaces based on their intended use. On the university press, the font is flattened, with miniature serifs. Elsewhere, single letters are individually designed. The educational institution’s and its teams’ official palette combines noble burgundy and perfect white.
