Texas State University began in 1899, when the Texas Legislature created Southwest Texas State Normal School to train teachers. Classes opened in 1903 with 303 students in Old Main, a Gothic-style building that remains on campus. New courses, classrooms, and residence halls followed during the 1910s. World War I slowed enrollment, but student numbers rose again in the early 1920s.
The institution became Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1923 and began awarding four-year degrees. During the 1930s, science laboratories, a library, and athletic programs expanded campus life. Broader academic study led to another name change in 1959, when it became Southwest Texas State College.
The university gained status in 1969 as Southwest Texas State University. Research centers, graduate programs, academic departments, laboratories, and new buildings developed through the 1970s and 1980s. Master’s and doctoral study expanded during the same period. The university adopted its current name in 2003 as it expanded its academic and research scope across Texas.
From 2004 to 2019, the university added teaching facilities, laboratories, programs, faculty, and partnerships with businesses and other institutions. By 2023, it offered study and research in technology, business, arts, and other fields. The Texas State Bobcats competed in NCAA Division I through the Sun Belt Conference, including football, basketball, baseball, and other varsity sports.

The Seal

At the top of the mace is this very seal, and beneath it on the mace itself are four medallions with Latin inscriptions: *”auctoritas,” “gravitas,” “humanitas,”* and *”veritas.”* These words symbolize prestige, seriousness, humanity, and truth.
